I clicked on the Perl banner (yeah, I click 'em to support Rob Embarassed ) and instead of going to the perl web page, the entire page loads into the little banner area and I get vertical and horizontal sliders so that I can attempt to read this full size page in a banner window.

If this is how it is supposed to work, um, just ignore this message. But I am not sure how much usefulness there is in trying to get folks to read a full size page in a teensie weensie window. Smile

Gee, I'm surprised to hear that anyone actually looks at those stupid banner ads, much less clicks on them. I lump them in the same category as spam email, pop-up ads, "unknown" and unwanted callers all day long, billboards, and junk mail from credit card companies. ALL an unwanted intrusion, extrememly annoying, and wish they would stop. I wish they would all be outlawed, with penalties of 100,000 for each offense, 10 years prison time after 10 offenses. Then have the courts ban these moronic people from access to the net. If their's something i really want or need, I'm perfectly capable of finding a source for it, I don't need these morons intruding in my life almost every second.

Steve,
I'm currently using the free version of the banner rotator cgi script, which means that once for every 250 impressions, the script writers banner appears. I control the HTML behind the banners that I place there but I can't control the HTML that is used for that banner, so it's probably not expecting to be wrapped up in the IFRAME html that I'm using. Having said that, I could robably dig into the CGI code and see if I can change the HTML.

Jim,
Good news. I'm going to stop running the banner ads at your request and convert this group into a "pay to enter" group, the rates will be $10/month for each member. Sign up now...

How do you think sites like this remain free? Do you think Rob pays for the cost of providing JP1 to the rest of us out of his own pocket? Show me any other free public forum that doesn't have banner ads... I bet you can't find any!

We should all be thankful that there's not an abundance of ads here. Rob's done a tremendous job in keeping ads to a minimum, both here and at hifi-remote. I've seen some sites where there's better than 50% of each page devoted to those "morons".

Plus, the only ads running here are those for BlueDo, Surf Remote and FileBug (except for the few random CGI script ads, which I explained above), so those ads are generally for things that are probably of interest to the folks here.

I can absolutely promise you that there will never be pop-up ads, full page ads or interuption page ads here. The most you'll get is a banner at the top and maybe one at the bottom of the pages.

The banner ads here at at RC aren't nearly as offensive as the other crap. They're small, and you can choose just not to click them. The worst ones are the pop-ups that block and hijack mouse and keyboard control. The ultimate worst are the one that pop-up BEHIND the screen your working on and hijack mouse and keyboard strokes to download some BS program behind your back and without you realizing. Then you end up with some idiot casino icon or other BS junk on your desktop, and idiot programs you never wanted. The annoyance has been going from unwanted morons calling all the time hawking garbage (because of the do-not-call list) to a LOT more of these invasive emails and pop-ups.
I've already got a cable that works pretty good, so I wouldn't have a need to go to filebug for one. As to BlueDo and Surfremote, I wouldn't shop either even if they had a one cent sale on everything they carry, simply because I don't need or want anything they carry.

The banner ads here are NOT offensive at all, nor do they come anywhere close to those others you're talking about. They're also infinitely better than the ads over at the old Yahoo group. As Rob said, these ads are probably of interest to many that visit here.

Well, that's your perogative. Just don't go lumping these guys in with your other "morons" because they're an integral part of the JP1 community. Not everyone has the tools and/or skills necessary to do their own JP1 hardware hacking, nor does everyone have local access to JP1 remotes. The guys at BlueDo, Filebug, and Surf Remote all do a fine job supporting JP1... the least we could do is give a little of that back.

Just FYI, I found the line of code that spits up the CGI ad and updated the link to make it work. So, next time one of you sees the CGI banner ad, could you do me a favor and click on it and tell me if it pops up a new browser window with the linked page showing.

Happened to get that banner when reading this page.

No it doesn't work, it opens something in the banner area still.

The url linked from the image/banner is to "http://www.shavenferret.com/scripts/%20target="

Looks like you might have forgotten to terminate the URL string?

I got it, the bug is in the original code, which explains why the original link didn't work. I think I fixed it properly this time.
