What can I do with a URC-6050?

Post by bizzybody »

I've found info on the forum that the URC-6050 has a serial port. What is the pinout on it?

Is there any software to control this remote? Has anyone figured out how to reprogram it?

I bought and used the software and cable for that many years ago. I don't think I could find it now, but I think the command set and pin out is documented in various places.

The command set lets you direct the remote to send signals (something you can't do with JP1). There exists a further command set that lets you reprogram the eeprom to do JP1-like things, BUT I'm fairly sure no one ever published that command set (it is a secret kept by the manufacturer). Without that, a 6050 is very limited because of the age of its setup code library.

The three pin serial port connector allows PC control of the remote. Here is a link to some software to do that but, AFAIK, no one here has ever reverse engineered the 3-pin port to do an upgrade.

However, I think you may be able to add a JP1 connector. I recently did that for a HouseLinc (that I believe is the URC-6050 packaged into a home automation controller). I used Mike England's RS 19-1925 schematic that I think is similar to the 6050.

You probably need some modest electronic skills to do that, but adding a JP1 interface is probably a whole lot easier than trying to reverse engineer the 3-pin interface.
