ir + jp1 + new computer = trouble?

Group,

I am not really a newbie, I have been jp1'ing for a long time. but it has been a year since needing to tweak my rs 15-1994. And I must be doing something silly. I have a pre-made jp1 cable connected to the parallel port. I have run ir 5.5,6 and 4.02 and it won't download from the remote and display the device modification tabs. Like I said it has been a long time, so I don't remember exactly what the IR interface was like, but when I download from the remote, i get nothing but the general and raw data tab. In the general tab there is a device button list box, but it is empty. What am I doing wrong? This use to work on my old computer. This is my first attempt on my new computer. A dell 8400 pruning xp home sp2 fully patched.

Maybe there has been a new software to use? What I am looking for is the ability to tweak and setup my remote with the jp1 cable. I have run the test interface option and it passes. I note that the light on the remote does not flash. I have also tried it with the batteries in and removed. Still no difference. I also have a backup remote and that one does not work either. I have not tried uploading anything yet. I don't want to ruin the remotes.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you don't have any of the RDF files. Check out the Software Tools link and get the latest version of IR and the RDF's.

Tried that, downloaded and used the latest rdf files.... Still a problem.

Thanks for your help....

If you're able to download from the remote, but don't get any remote-specific details, the likely cause is lack of RDF's (or IR can't find them). In IR, go to the File, Set Directory, RDF Path and make sure the folder containing the RDF files is selected.

In the old days. IR used to require that all the RDFs be stored in the same directory as IR itself, but the current versions of IR allow you to store them elsewhere, just as long as you set the path, like Mark described.

yup, was an rdf location issue. I did not double click the final directory in the rdf dialog, only single clicked it and pressed OK. This made it so the directory was not selected.

So anyway I was able to download the remote. But now I just have to figure out what I had setup. I thought I had some macros and key moves setup, but they don't show up. I had all the 'S' keys setup to do things but they don't show up in ir now. Funny thing is that if I upload it to my backup remote they work right. Maybe something to do with an extender......

Anyway thanks for your help.
