I'm working on one right now. It still needs a few modifications though. I put it down for a few days to celebrate Xmas but will complete it either today or tomorrow.

aaw this is insane!

I can only find ir demodulators on all the Australian electronics stores, and mouser want 12 bucks to post it!

All this for a pesky JVC home theatre...

Sad

Well, has anybody made one yet?

I must be missing something here - from the links posted above,
I understand that the parallel port is used to input a bit sequence,
and that the Digitrace program does lots of clever stuff with it.

But I don't see where the actual hardware design is described. in
particular for an IR variant.

I have had some success using WinLirc, but would be keen to try
this - if I could find the hardware designs... Confused

Embarassed That link hasn't been working for me, and I wrongly assumed
that the other digitrace_zip.zip was the same file

I have it now, thanks Smile
So, do you have it working?

Has anybody here built this device and got it working? I did build it, but I was never able to get it working.

I just called Tommy Tyler as he didn't respond to a recent email that I sent him and it turns out that he's finished with JP1 projects, due mainly to the fact that he didn't get any response from the group regarding this device.

Not to totally change the subject, but an easier (but slightly more expensive alternative) is the ira/tira devices from Home Electro. They have a $25 protocol that includes a decoder that will work with DecodeIR.dll. They announced the new decode in the old yahoo group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/message/28107

I don't know if the new version still works with JP1, but it seems likely. The only downside to the device is that it doesn't do a good job of displaying the raw data when decodeir.dll doesn't recognize the protocol.
Maybe they'd fix this if they thought it would help them sell more units?

I've just built the one for IR. It IS working as far as I can tell. What's wrong with yours?

I haven't played with it since Xmas (I think) but as I recall, I could never get it to cause an interrupt, so the PC would hang until it timed out.

Is your OS Win98 or WinXP? I was using Win98, which is supposedly OK, but Tommy said that he doesn't know of anyone who got it to work with WinXP, so if you are using WinXP, I'm sure Tommy would like to hear the details.

What about the rest of the guys that bought kits from me, did any of you build the device and if so, does it work?

Who knows, maybe if Tommy finally gets some feedback from us over this device, he might re-think his decision to quit the group (which was over this, btw).

I haven't had a lot of time to play with this but Tommy sent me an IR version of his receiver. I'm using WinXP and haven't been able to get the software to work. I keep meaning to play with it but never seem to have any (enough) free time lately.

It's working on my laptop running XP (SP2 - I don't think it matters, though.)

You guys may be just confused by the idiosyncrasies in Digitrace. There's a warning in Tommy's instructions:
Quote:
NOTE: DO NOT experiment with making a record yet. Windows is frozen from the
moment of arming until all required samples have been taken, and there is no way
to abort other than shutting down the program with Task Manager. Make sure you understand how the program works before experimenting.

You have to configure at least the Trigger Channel and the Input Port before you click on the Sample button or it'll lock up.

There are a few other things that are not quite intuitive, but they are all mentioned in his instructions.

I fed it a few Sony signals, measured intervals of the pulses, length of the bursts, etc., and all looked within reasonable ranges. Haven't tried it while the machine is busy yet, though.

If you're reading Sony signals, you're obviously talking about IR signals, did you try capturing RF signals?

Mine is working good with laptop and xp sp2 as well. There are however 2 problems I had along the way. The first was the hood part # 156-2025 at the bottom of the plug this hood has a lot of plastic and would not alow it to plug into the port on my laptop it wouldnt fit. Not a big deal for me i use an extension parallel cable. The second was after an os reload digitrac would no longer work, parallel port was defaulting to ecp mode. This is working great with CaptureIR.

I would like to learn some RF codes from a ceiling fan remote that sends RF commands at around 433MHz. I want to then cut and paste the code into a learning remote that supports RF.

I am very interested in the IR/RF reader device is there anywhere I can buy one assembled and tested?

Regards,

Fleetz
