What was the problem then, and what did you do to fix it?

The solution was to make the DVD upgrade as a CD device as per Uwe's suggestion.

Doing so resolved a key mapping problem that turned out to be the underlying issue. Due to the limited number of transport keys I was using in my test config the key mapping problem wasn't initially apparent.

Is there a way in which I can have the CD upgrade device tied to the CD button but for the LCD display to show DVD on the 5550 ?

If you want to read "DVD" on the display, you have to create a DVD upgrade and assign it to the @AUX2 button. On every other device button, the screen will read "DVD2"! Then create a macro, which calls the @AUX2 button (e.g. on A[AUDIO] or B[VIDEO]).

My thoughts are that if creating a fixed device upgrade as a DVD code and assigning it to the CD button causes the buttons to be out of whack, that probably means that the CD button is always going to use the D buttonlayout, in which case you ought to be able to create a CD upgrade then once you've copied it over to it, change the device type in IR.

I haven't tried this out myself, so I'm just speculating.
