I have the URC6131 and it's been working great up until I swapped out my Toshiba DVD for a Panasonic PV-D4743 combination DVD/VCR.

The VCR side works fine but NONE of the DVD codes will work.

I called the "One for All" folks and they said I need a code 1762 which isn't in my device and I have to send it back to them to have it added.

Obviously I cannot do that because it is a modified device from Surf with eeprom and JP1.

Can someone step me through adding this code if it is possible. I haven't a clue on how to do it.

The control is currently fully programmed with 2 Tivos, TV, 2 Satellite boxes and the VHS side of the dual Panasonic. I programmed the VHS side into the TAPE button and would like to put the DVD into the DVD button (clever ain't I). Smile

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed

Although it is not identical, have you looked at:

Panasonic_PV-D4732.txt

This might give you some ideas of how to set up the PV-D4743. If you get it working, consider uploading your PV-D4743 Smile

Also, if you want to separate the DVD from the VCR and not use a combiner like the one above, why not just create your own upgrade? It is pretty easy:
> learn the codes from the original remote to any learning remote (the 8810w is less than $20 at wal-mart),
> upload to IR, check the learned tab for the protocol, device, (sub-device), and OBC,
> then create the device upgrade you need in KM using the info you learned in IR (put in your remote, the protocol, the device code, then mostly it is alot of entering OBCs on the function page, then setting up your button page),
> now copy it back to IR and download it into the remote.

If you have tried this and it failed my apologies in advance for suggesting it; if you have not tried it due to fear of complexity, it is really a piece of cake. The only hard part is most learning remotes only learn about 15-20 codes at a time which means it is a several step procedure to acquire all the codes you need.

What does that mean?
Panasonic is quite consistent about using Panasonic:176.0 as the code for DVD's and for the DVD specific functions of combos.

If the setup code DVD/0490 doesn't operate any of the DVD functions of your device, then that device must not follow those rules and (lacking a learning JP1 remote) you'll need more help just to find out where to start.

If setup code DVD/0490 does operate a few functions of your device then that is the starting point for figuring out what you need.

That's a great starting point if his DVD works with DVD/0490 and he's trying to combine it with the VCR on a single device mode. But neither of those assumptions match the question asked.

But buying an 8810w at Walmart takes away all the sport and intellectual challenge of deducing the required upgrade from only resources available free on the internet Smile

The DVD does NOT work with 0490. The only function that works under 0490 is MENU, nothing else. My 6131 only has: 0490, 0632, 1362, 1462 and 1490 under DVDs in the manualand NO PANASONIC AT ALL under DVD/VCR combo. I tried the 1762 and it wasn't accepted.

I would prefer to have 2 separate buttons for DVD and VCR. VCR is working fine.

My 6131 does have the JP1.

That's surprising, but it's a starting point. Your DVD has the same menu command as DVD/0490, which is the same menu command as that upgrade file for the PV-D4732.

The GUIDE button of DVD/0490 is the "title" function of that upgrade. Does that really not work for you?

The arrow keys and select of DVD/0490 all match that upgrade.

You probably should open that upgrade and try a few of the EFC codes that don't match DVD/0490:
1) Set your 6131 to DVD/0490
2) Find rows in the functions sheet of that upgrade in which byte2 is equal to 3.
3) Test the EFC in that row by a short press of setup followed by the 3 digit EFC number.
Is there a "DVD mode" button on your original remote? The DVD mode function (EFC 018) in that upgrade looks especially interesting.

We assumed that, but we assumed that it doesn't have learning.

This is my ignorance of VCR/DVD combos showing, but how do you give a play command to the DVD?

That upgrade file seems to have just one play function and it is the VCR play function. To play the DVD do you send the "DVD mode" command followed by that VCR play function?

If common commands like that must be sent as VCR commands, even when they go to the DVD (while a few commands must go as true DVD commands) then you'll need a combo protocol or a bunch of keymoves, even if you still want a dedicated device key for the DVD.

Problem is, I am virtually clueless when it comes to all this JP1 stuff. I tried reading the FAQ but I guess my ADD or Alzheimers is kicking in. I find all but the most basic stuff above my head. I only got it because I have 2 TiVo's and needed to control them both from the same 6130 and someone set it up for me. In any case the Pana OEM remote has 2 buttons, one labeled DVD and the other VCR. When you press either one the mode switches. Power is common and turns off the box (but not in DVD mode only in VCR). The Play, pause, FF, rewind etc etc are all "shared" buttons.

If I just want to load the upgrade file you pointed to earlier and try it, what would I need to do? Just open and write it like I would a downloaded image of the existing control? Beginners forum, right? Very Happy

Thanks,
Ed

Being a newbie myself, I am not sure if this is what you are asking for.. if your skills have already gone beyond this I apologize. Embarassed

1. download Remote Control Programmer (IR for short) from the yahoo JP1 group
2. if you have microsoft excel, download KeyMap-Master (KM for short) from the JP1 group. If you do not have microsoft excel, download RM
3. download the upgrade file for the PVD4732. For this last link, to download it you may need to right click on it and then pick 'save target as' to download it to your computer. this is because it is a .txt file and Internet Explorer likes to just open text files in a new window.
4. unzip all files into a common directory such as c:\JP1
5. start microsoft excel. open the KM.xls spreadsheet
6. from within KM there is a LOAD button. Use it to load the PVD4732.txt into KM
7. now modify PVD4732: if you click on the remote cell you can activate a drop down arrow and select your remote from the list (6131)
8. click the buttons tab at the bottom and you may see some items in gray or not listed that you want. you can add and move buttons, as well as (re-)assign buttons to shifted-keys (second column) on this page.
9. use the SAVE button on the spreadsheet and save it to a new filename (i like to add an underscore and the remote type 6131 and another underscore then the word 'modified' to the initial filename, but that is just me)
10. now highlight everything in the device box, then press ctrl-c to copy it to your clipboard (or press edit dropdown box and click copy)
11. now press "go to IR" button.
12. in IR, select FILE, then NEW, then SELECT, then pick the rdf (remote defiinitions file) for your remote (6131)
12A. here is where you should hook up your remote to your JP1 cable, then test the connection (click interface, then click check interface), then click remote, then click download from remote, then save this virgin file (file/save as/"virgin 6131M IR.txt") so that you can restore your 6131 to this working condition should something go terribly wrong later and turn your remote into a paperweight)
13. now click on the devices tab, then click add button, then ctrl-v to paste the KM device stuff into IR.
14. leave IR open, go back to KM and now copy everything in the protocol box (ctrl-c or edit/copy)
15. go back to IR and click the protocol tab, then add, then ctrl-v to paste protocol info into IR.
16. in IR, save the file.. file/save as.. pick something descriptive, i usually add IR in the name to distiguish it from the KM text files. alternatively you can save IR files in one subdirectory like c:\JP1\IR_FILES and KM files in another subdirectory like c:\JP1\KM_FILES.
17. now, still in IR, click remote, upload to the remote, and watch for the lower left corner.. 2 red flashes means you are done. then unhook the remote and go test it.
18. don't leave the remote connected for long periods to the JP1 cable if you have batteries in it or they may decide to leak.

Also, consider reading the Beginner's Guide to JP1, if you have not done so already.

Hope this helps! (hey, I went to the surf site and did you know that jp1 guru, The Robman, soldiered your 6 pin connector and your eeprom into your 6131? You are touching an object that has been touched by greatness!)

You are da man! Laughing Thank you so much for your help. The older model device loaded and worked 95%. A couple minor key assignments later and now it's better then free Viagra. Your step-by-step made it simple even for simple minded me. It proves how valuable resources like this board are.

Once again, Thanks!
Ed

After re-reading my own post today, I thought it looked a bit long and confusing, so I am very glad it worked for you.

Question: does the 6131 remote have a backlight (or keys that glow in the dark)? cataracts sück Shocked

PS when i initially wrote that "cataracts sück" (without the umlaut) the software that drives this board converted it to "cataracts stink" Evidently the software can be fooled by adding umlauts Razz

Agreed! John, can I have your permission to use this as my signature line? It is pretty funny, I like it!

I can't believe the word "svck" is verbotten here. Replacing it with another word is funny as h3ll, er, heck. Shocked And NO dammmmit, it's not backlit. If it was it would be the (almost) perfect control. Buttons are too small as well. My vision had deteriorated to.

Actually, I didn't know that it was, so I deleted that restriction.

Smile No problem .... just struck me funny. I wonder what else is in the no-no list.

On another note, thank you very much for making this very valuable resource available.
