Layout Ideas for HTPC

Post by maxse »

Well I have the 2117 remote now and I love it. But I recently got Microsft Media center edition 2005 for my HTPC and it came with the remote. The remote is pretty cool to use because it has automatic buttons like "watch live TV" and "Watch recorded TV" etc... There are certain problems though as this one remote cant control everything u can only learn one device.

Now I have the 2117. Does any1 have any recommends on how I can layout the buttons so that they are easy for other to understand? I would have to leave this remote. I was looking at the Harmony thats made for the MCE, but its a little expensive right now.

wow I just thought of something. I might not even need girder for anything. Basically I can just load an upgrade of the MCE 2005 remote into my jp1 remote and then just map the buttons accordingly right? I dont seem to find an upgrade on the remote anywhere so I guess I will have to make one myself. Is it very difficult? Will I have to learn every single key on the remote?

And still I will need to have layout so please give me some ideas.
There is also one problem. The MCE remote has a seperate button to skip track, and to fast forward. The 2117 does not have this. Is it possible somehow to use a long keypress on the FF on the 2117 to mean ff and a quick tap to mean next track or something?

Any ideas if this will work with the IR reciever that came with the MCE remote, because I dont think it is meant to recieve long key presses etc... I know this is a lot of questions but I just had this epiphony and since I just built my HTPC I want to make sure I set everything up once and the correct way. Thanks...

There are a couple of places to search (see the#1 Search Faq in the Code search forum) for existing upgrades, or upgrades which can be converted to work with your remote. If not as you suggest you'll probably have to learn most keys and create an upgrade using KM or RM, but don't worry it's not that difficult or time consuming (You could probably have done it in the time between you posting and me replying)
And still I will need to have layout so please give me some ideas.
That's often a personal thing and more how you like to work, I've had mine for a few months now and still keep finding ocassional tweaks to make everything more logical to me (and more illogical to everyone else.)
Without knowing which buttons you don't know how to place, then it's pretty difficult to make any suggestions. In my experience there is a subset of the buttons I use reguarly and they are the ones allocated to single keypresses (or long keypresses), the other stuff I use rarely if ever gets assigned to shifted buttons and I just have a lookup sheet to tell me what to press.

There are LKP device/protocols available for the 2117. The IR receiver being used doesn't matter since the processing of the long press is handled purely by the 2117, it just sends on the "real" button press(es) to the IR receiver. So you will be able to do what you want. However the normal way to do track/chapter skip seems to be to use channel +/-, and that works well, I've done like you suggest and setup a long press for track skip which is OK for skipping the odd track/chapter but quickly becomes tiresome if your using it to search for a specific track/chapter

thanks pgk. I actually meant having a long key press be regular search, anda short one just be track skip. I was going to map them to the channell +/- but the thing is that MCE also has a PVR function so I will need those keys for actually switching channells...

I waqs looking for some help in mapping buttons like watch LiveTV, and Watch Recorded TV I am having trouble figuring that out.

As far as the MCE 2005 remote I found an upgrade for the MCE remote but judging by the date of the upgrade, it looks like it was the 2004 one, and supposedly the 2004 will not work with 2005. Any1 else?

I'm not familiar with th eprecise system your trying to control, but really you've got lots of options and it does depend on how you like to work/think.

If you find "Watch LiveTV" and "Watch Recorded TV" are logically separate things, you could set them up on different device buttons. So for example you could have all the live tv functions assigned to the TV device and all the recorded tv functions to the AUX device. (If you need to switch mode between the two, it is possible (with the extenders) to assign functions/macros to the device buttons themselves).

If you want just a single keymap for everything I'd just work out the buttons you use the most and start assigning them to keys which seem to be logically positioned or labelled, it's quick and easy to change things later if you find you don't like something.
