JP1 Remotes

I know this has probably been answered a couple times, but I couldn't find it when I searched. Here is the scenario.

I have an 8810 in the bedroom controlling an Apex TV (thanks to JP1), a Kenwood rec, Pioneer DVD, Mitsubishi VCR. I got a new Philips DirectTivo and finally found that the correct (partial) device code is VCR/0618. I wanted that on my sat button, and mapped the VCR type to the SAT button and programmed the 0618 code to it. I learned several buttons (info, exit, f_fwd, f_rwd, etc). They worked fine as learned commands. I got the EFC out of IR. I did a key move in IR for the learned buttons, but they do not work. I've tried a few times and can't get the keymoves to do anything while the learned commands work fine.

Another weird issue is VPT. I run all sound through my receiver. All VPT is turned on and the VPT device is RCVR. It works fine in all modes except SAT. I can learn the vol commands, but the VPT doesn't work. I've also tried keymoves to put the vol buttons in the SAT mode and don't have any luck.

I'm sure I'm missing something fundamental on this remote. Any ideas?

I am trying to get the bedroom system working first before I try the livingroom system with the same DirectTivo unit. Down there, I have a 15-1994. Any hope of using that with the DirectTivo unit without a lot of work, or should I just use the spare 8810W there too?

The version of the PVR/0618 code that's in the URC-8811 uses 2 bytes of variable data and therefore doesn't accept advanced codes. That explains why your keymoves don't work.

Also, when you change the natural state of a device button (ie, changing the SAT button to use a VCR code) you break VPT. Why don't know why this is, just that it is.

However, as you're a JP1 user, you shouldn't be wasting time trying to do things the old fashioned way, you should download any one of the Tivo upgrades and customize it to your tastes, which will eliminate the need to learn any Tivo functions. Plus, you can set it up as a SAT code if you like, which means VPT will still work. There is an official SAT version of the Tivo code, which is called SAT/1142, so if you want to be totally consistant, you could call your upgrade that if you like.

Thanks for the input. I knew I was missing something fundamental. I have downloaded the latest IR and KM and think I have set up a new device type with keymoves etc. using the Philips-Tivo.txt file as a base. I set it up as a SAT 1142 code. I used the TIVO Advanced type. Is that correct, or should I have used one of the other types? I modified a few things and added a few and it should be great. I had actually never tried the KM stuff before. I was able to do everything I needed with IR up to now. I'll give it a shot tonight.

When you said you were "controlling an Apex TV (thanks to JP1)" I took that to mean that you'd used an upgrade. Hopefully now that you've discovered how easy it is to add upgrades, you'll start re-vamping all your other devices.

I have the 6131 and found out it only has partial functions, for my directtivo at least. I DL from the files section and got it to work quickly.

If I remember correctly if you use the sat function you loose the play, record, FF and etc buttons for your tivo. I just used the keymoves for the volume controls and left as vcr function. That was a quick fix for me anyhow.

Rob, I got it working last night without any problems. A few different tweaks to get the keys mapped correctly, but no problems. Thank you very much. I also have a Kenwood rcvr that was giving me a little trouble, but found a Kenwood upgrade and tweaked it till I was happy and installed that. Now I have no learned codes, 3 different upgrades, and full functionality. I guess I'll start looking into doing the same on my 15-1994. I'm thinking I'll probably just go with the other 8810 though because of the keymapping on the 1994. No Guide button etc. It would make it too hard for the rest of the family.

I guess it's almost time to dive into extenders and see what trouble I can get into there.

I guess I did have an upgrade for my Apex TV, but I had gotten it from someone else.

BTW SemperFi, I only had partial functions also until I did the upgrade. I couldn't get my keymoves to work either. This fixed it all including VPT.

The 15-1994 has a GUIDE button, it's in the upper right corner from the arrow keys. Personally, I think the 15-1994 makes for an excellent PVR remote, it's the one my family uses for our ReplayTV all the time. We have the "Replay Guide" programmed to the GUIDE button, and the "Channel Guide" programmed to the button next to it, which is the SURR button. We use the ENTER and TV/VIDEO buttons for "Instant Replay" and "Quick Skip".
