Programming Questions for URC-8080

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Programming Questions for URC-8080

Post by schmidlapp »

I have a URC-8080 remote. I also have downloaded JP1 software and sucessfully programmed my remote. However I still have some questions. How do you program specific commands to specific buttons? Most of my buttons work fine but there are a few functions that I still need. For some functions I need to press the "shift" button first. I would like to change this and make certain buttons do certain basic commands. In other words I want one button to do what another button does now. How do I switch these commands? How and where do I find specific codes for these buttons and how do I program my remote once I have these codes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. schmidlapp@netzero.net

As you've posted this in a JP1 forum, rather than the specific non-JP1 forum, I'm assuming that you are a JP1 user?

If so, what you need to do is see if we have upgrades for your equipment in the file section, then download them and customize them as you see fit using either KM or RM. If you want to un-shift the "DISPLAY" button (for example) by assigning the display function to the "LAST CH" button, go for it.

If you are not a JP1 user, you're only option is to use good old fashioned keymoves, as described in the user manual, you can get the advanced codes that you will need here.

Yes I am a JP1 user but exactly how is this "keymove" acomplished? (example: how do I swap commands of 2 (already programmed buttons?) I am not sure how to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

With JP1 (on most models), you can't KeyMove a function from one key to another. You can only KeyMove an EFC number or Hex command to a Key.

The Display function that you want to put onto LAST CH has a hex command (and probably an EFC number), but it may not be easy to find.

If the setup code you're using is included in devices4.xls, you can look up the EFC number there. If not, you could post the setup code number, and the type and brand of device and someone here probably knows the EFC numbers.

I don't know if the 8080 supports KeyMoves (994 command) without JP1. If it does, that may be the easy way to create the right KeyMove (since that does work using a key as the source).

As a JP1 user, the way you would do it is to download an upgrade file for whatever device you are using and then, when you assign the functions to buttons, assign the "display" function to the PREV CH button, and assign the "prev ch" function to the DISPLAY button.

You could also use the keymover function described in the online manual to copy the functions from each button to the other, but you cannot copy from a shifted button on the remote itself, so you would need to use advanced codes to re-program the button. If you were to program the keymoves in IR.exe, you would also need to use advanced codes (aka EFCs).

Remember also, that when you program a keymove to a shifted button, you need to use the SETUP button as your shift key, not the official SHIFT button. If you use an upgrade to reverse the buttons you can use the official SHIFT button.

Using the SHIFT key on the URC-8080 is explained in greater detail in the manual.
