Walkthroug to JP1 programing.

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Walkthroug to JP1 programing.

Post by jerma »

At first, i must apologize if the answers to my questions are allready given.

I am new to JP1 programming, and awaiting for my URC-9960 and ultra cable to arrive by mail.

I am trying to build a general picture, how to use the JP1. Is there some how-to document on the subject ?

I am a bit lost, cause there is so much info on using JP1.

I'v read some stuff from the Beginner index, and know how to connect the cable, and how to install IR and RDF:s.

The area that, in my oppinion, needs more clearing up for beginners (me) is how to use the softwarer available.

- What you can do with IR and what not. Also some things to avoid.
- What is the Extender and how to use it. Does the extender replace the "user interface" on the remote ? I understand that after installing the extender, even the device buttons don't work without making a macro on it ?
- What are KeyMaster and other similar software and how do i use them ?

And as you well know, there are now stupid questions, just stupid people.

I'm new here but have been in electronics repair for years , but my advice would be to just try things. It's pretty much a DIY experience with help and feedback from the experts when something doesn't work right. You can read everything (you'll probably miss something important - I did several times) but trying things is the only way to learn.

Usually I'm telling people how to hook up Tvs , stereos , hww to get into menus , etc but my advice has always been to start simple and expand after you're comfortable with what you're already doing. If you try to do the most advanced features and it doesn't work , then you won't have a clue what went wrong.
Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now.

I'v read some help files during the day, and got a better idea of the whole thing.

Some blanks are still on the following 2 things:

1. programming devices that are not in the remote. I use only European equipment, so this what i have to learn. And like zaphod7501 said, learning by try-and-fail maight be the best way. If i understand correctly, i can download a whole "device-file" that i can upload to the remote to via JP1 to get the gasic functions ? And add special buttons with seperate codes.

2. Working with the Extender. Do i first put in all the codes for all the devices i use and THEN install the Extender ? Does the remote's installation menu (URC-9960) work after putting the extender in ? For example, can i still program the Home Theater mode via the remote's menu (markin witch keysets are used from which device mode) if i have the extender installed, or do i have to put in all the key codes, key-by-key, to the HT mode ?

Does the remote loose the Extender congif when running out o batteries ?

What bad sides are there in using the Extender, if any ?

Best regards,

Jerma, as you're a complete beginner, I would strongly suggest that you learn to walk before you try to run. By that I mean you should first figure out how to load upgrades and do some basic programming using the JP1 tools before you try and install the extender.

The idea with extenders is that you do all of your remote programming using the JP1 tools. The extenders don't usually support any of the remote's own programming functions. When the extender is installed and running, all of the buttons on the remote are meaningless until you give them a meaning, so the HT button has no more meaning that the PLAY button, unless you program some sort of macro to the HT button.

As you have European equipment, there's a good chance that you have several devices that are not supported by the remote, and as there are less European members than US members, you may well find that there's not always a ready-made upgrade file for you to use. In such a situation, you will have to use the remote's learning ability to capture the signals from your un-supported remote and then create an upgrade yourself. The link I gave you before tells you how to do this.
