JP1 Remotes

i realize this is probably not the best place to ask this but i will anyway. i want to build one of the jp1 cables <among other things> but its been 20 some years since i have played around with this stuff <emphasize played as in i was never good )> anyway i was trying to figure out what is the best way to construct these items solder or wire wrapp? and suggestions on a tool kit to start.. i already own a multimeter .. thanks in advance

I guess it really depends on what kind of JP1 cable you were looking to build. There are parallel port, serial port and USB versions available. If you've "played around" with soldering, you could probably handle building up the "simple" parallel port model as it doesn't require as much soldering skill as the others. I haven't looked closely at the serial, but the USB is a bit more complicated (especially to get the parts, although you can order a kit).

As far as tools, a multimeter is helpful (but you already have that) and a soldering iron is basically a must (an inexpensive, pencil type iron from Radio Shack etc should be sufficient). Other than that, you'll need the parts for the cable you want to builld, some solder, and a bit of patience. There are vendors that sell either JP1 cable kits or completed cables. If you're not really comfortable with doing it yourself, you could always go that route (albeit sometimes with a bit higher cost). Hope this helps.

one thing i noticed looking at the plans is what appears to be an unisilated wire that is run to make the conections and insulated jumpers when nessary to avoid shorts.. what is this bare wire.. i mean gage wise etc

Just about any wire from 24 AWG down to 30 AWG should work; solid wire is a bit easier to work with than stranded.
