Questions about URC-7800
I am new to this forum and the concept of using the JP1 connector for programming. I currently have the Cinema 7 remote which I understand is capable of using JP1. I understand it only has the holes for the connector so I need to purchase the connector in addition to the cable. I have a few questions. First, where can I purchase the JP1 connector? I used to work in electronics so I'm pretty confident I can handle the soldering and the assembly of the cable.
More importantly, I'm looking to purchase a new remote that has backlight capability as I'm tired of not being able to see the functions when watching DVD's with the lights off. I'm leaning towards the URC-100. What I would like to do is use my URC-7800 on my Toshiba TV/DVD Combo (MD20FM1) in my bedroom. The only remotes I have seen so far with codes for this are the URC-9960 and URC-9962. The code is 0695. My question is whether there is a simple way to program this on the URC-7800 so I don't have to learn all the functions from the remote. If so, what is involved in doing so. I plan on basing my decision of the assembling the connector and cable on how easy this will be. Thanks in advance for your response.

I believe that both cable vendors include a free 6-pin connector when you buy a cable.
A good learning remote with backlight is the One For All URC-8811 ($19)
With JP1 you can make any remote control anything.
How easy is it?....

Where did you get the information that the code is 0695?kdog38 wrote:The only remotes I have seen so far with codes for this are the URC-9960 and URC-9962. The code is 0695.
Setup code DVD/0695 is in the 15-2133 and the URC-6131 as well as the two you mentioned. It is a protocol and device number used by a Grundig TV/DVD combo and a Tevion VCR/DVD combo. In my large library of IR signals, I don't have any other samples matching it. I rather doubt that a Toshiba device would use this, but I can't be certain.
If you really think that's the right setup code, tell me once you have the pins soldered in your 7800 and I'll post an RM upgrade file for that setup code. Then it's quite easy for you to add that upgrade to your eeprom image in IR.EXE.
If DVD/0695 is wrong, then it's still quite easy to upgrade the 7800, and fairly easy to find the right signals without learning them all (though learning them all isn't too hard either).
BTW: DVD/0695 in the urc-8060 is different from DVD/0695 in those other models in a way that has me confused and is even less likely to fit a Toshiba device, but you probably aren't interested in the urc-8060 anyway.
Johnsfine,
I'm sure about the code. In fact, if you go to the OFA website they have a dropdown to look for codes. See below.

Perhaps Toshiba is using the IR of the other manufacturers or vice versa. I purchased the URC-9960 and set the code on the DVD device and it does seem to control all the functions. In the mean time I stopped at Radio Shack and bought the 15-2116 remote and I might stick with that one instead of investing the money in the URC-100. I might look at the URC-8811 for the upstairs or just use the 7800 but it is a pain when watching TV at night. Any recommendations on where to purchase the cable or the kit from?

I guess they are. I checked that OFA web site. For 9960 Toshiba DVD they list 0503, 0695 and 1045. 0503 is every Toshiba DVD I'd ever heard of before. 0695 seems to be your Toshiba DVD. I don't know what 1045 is.kdog38 wrote: Perhaps Toshiba is using the IR of the other manufacturers
I knew OFA is working from a much larger IR library than I am, so it's not surprising that they know about a Toshiba I missed. It's more surprising that their web based lookup doesn't have the Grundig and Tevion which match 0695
The market place forum and/or Rob's web pages tell everything I might know (and then some) about where to buy the cables.kdog38 wrote: bought the 15-2116 remote and I might stick with that one instead of investing the money in the URC-100. I don't know what a URC-100 is or why you might want one and I lost track of what remote you want to use for what or why. So when you're ready for a DVD/0695 upgrade that can be installed in whichever JP1 remote you like (via minor tweaks in RM, and transfer to IR.EXE) ask me and I'll post one.
Thanks for all your help. I ordered the cable and I'm sure I'll be asking more questions once I get it. My first order of business is getting all my device functions working on the 15-2116. My receiver will probably be the most work but I did see there was a file in the JP1 Yahoo library for it Sony (STR-DE935). Finding this information has me inspired and I have great Christmas ideas for my two buddies who have a table of remotes at their houses. Hopefully I can learn enough about this to help them set up their devices and free them from their multiple remote problem.
With various friends and relatives I've tended to be quite unsuccessful at such gifts.kdog38 wrote:help them set up their devices and free them from their multiple remote problem.
People (who didn't decide on their own to buy a universal remote) have an amazing amount of trouble with the modal nature of the remote (you must put the remote in TV mode before sending a TV command, put it in cable mode before a cable command, etc.)
Many people are far less bothered than most of us would be by the typical "multiple remote problem". It really isn't all that much trouble to pick up the right remote in a well organised house. In my house I consider myself lucky everytime I can find any one of the remotes, so I really need multiple remotes with every remote controlling every IR device in the house, so finding one is enough.
My best results with gift setups were in creating a primary mixed device mode cut down to the most important functions of each device (like a Home Theater mode but more specific) then burying all the advanced commands in device specific modes. Then the user uses the universal only in that primary mode and goes back to the original remote for all the advanced commands (because he still doesn't get the idea of a modal remote). But that's better than the cases where the user gets immediately baffled and never uses the universal remote at all.
Re: Questions about URC-7800
Johnsfine, When you get a chance can you post the RM upgrade file for the 0695 device code? Let me know what it's called when you do so I can download it. DVD_0695_Grundig_Tevion_Toshiba.rmdu
I merged data from the Tevion and Grundig files I found with the basic commands of DVD/0695.
If you have any corrections (functions I missed you can get by learning from the original remote, or functions I gave unclear names to, or noting that certain functions don't do anything on the Toshiba) please tell me and/or upload an improved file.
Also notice that you can click the OBC label in the functions tab in RM and see all the commands sorted by OBC number. You'll notice there are just small gaps in the sequence all the way from 64 to 115. The firmware designers probably didn't leave gaps there. Those OBC numbers probably each do something. I won't guarantee they do something save (search for and read a few posts on the the risks of trying random OBCs, to decide for yourself whether you want to).
If you decide to test those missing ones, post the results back here.
