trouble getting started

Please forgive if this is a FAQ. I've searched a good bit but I do not know the jargon so well yet so maybe I missed something. Anyway.
I have a 6131 I am trying to extend. I got a simple cable via mail order and soldered in a 6 pin header. I d/l ir.exe and ran it with cable plugged into remote and PC (tried my desktop and laptop with same results). Trying "check interface" gets me "No respons from the Remote. Make sure your Interface is plugged into JP1 properly". Parallel port is working (I can print via it), OS is win2k. Port address is set right. About 1-2 seconds after attempting a interface check, the 6131 LED lights up for something like 3/4 second. I read on the hardware forum that one person was suggested to try a download without autocheck, which I tried, and got "Did not receive a response (acknowledgement) from the remote after sending device address. (ErrNo=7, Param=160)" and the same LED blink.
Not really sure what to check from here. Any suggestions on what to try/check from here?
Thanks for reading...
