I am getting a 6131M and just reading up while waiting. The OFA site lists Upgradeable Technology first on the list of features. WoW must be important selling point. Of course upgradeable does not turn up in a word search of the manual, not anywhere on the site.
Is it just me being dense, or is there a little communication oversight here? I did not buy it because it was upgradeable, but suddenly feel like I am being cheated!! Kidding of course, but tapping into all the anger over ads with footnoted text and no foot notes included, stuff like that is annoying.
So, please show me exactly where I missed this information so I can beat myself up and get on with my day. |

upgradeable merely means that the remote has an eeprom, and part of that eeprom is devoted to "upgrade memory". For remotes with modem capability, like the 8910, you can get upgrades over the phone. For other remotes, that means that you can send the remote in and ueic will add the code needed to the upgrade portion of the eeprom, in some cases thru the JP-1 port, in other cases they may have to add an eeprom and the pins. With the 6012/6011 and 8011, they'll add the pins and eeprom. With the 8810/8811, and some others, they basically perform JP-1 tasks. Your 6131 means they'll add the pins and eeprom if you send it in, if the docs, packaging, etc. said it was upgradeable. With the 601x series they have been just swapping remotes with the pins and eeprom already added, and uploading the code needed. I'm not sure of what they'll do with a 6131. Since you're getting a 6131M someone already added the eeprom, pins, etc., so it'll be JP-1 ready when you get it. I don't know how ueic will handle mailing it in to them since they usually have a disclaimer about any mods that they didn't do. If the remote sold without pins and eeprom, then at least the pcb has provisions for them.

You can download the manual in PDF format from here...

ABOUT UPGRADING
The One For All 6-Device PVR Universal Remote
Control has the largest infrared code library available.
However, if you purchase a brand new home entertainment
device, it may not respond to the codes stored in
the remote control’s memory.
If this happens, please contact our Customer Support
department (see Customer Support on the next page)
to upgrade the remote control. The Customer Support
representative will search our entire database for a code
that matches your device and instruct you how to enter
it into your One For All 6-Device PVR Universal
Remote Control.
If the code for your home entertainment or home
automation device is not in our database,we will need
to "capture" the code for that device from its original
remote control. A new code would then be created and
need to be entered into your One For All 6-Device PVR
Universal Remote Control. If necessary, the Customer
Support representative can instruct you how to begin
the capture procedure.
NOTE:One For All reserves the right to replace a returned
remote control with a new one of equal or superior functionality.
