Newbie Questions

Post by chasman1964 »

Hi, all.

This JP1 stuff is pretty cool and addicting. My wife already hates it!

I have a couple of questions:

1) There has been some discussion on other forums that the KM DiscreteON and DiscreteOFF buttons somehow magically allow you to internally track the power state of a device that does not have discrete on and off functions, but I have found nothing to support that notion. How (if at all) does one implement discrete on and off when only a power toggle is available?

2) Is there any way to change the delay between programmed functions in a macro? I have a macro that turns on a TV, turns on an A/V receiver and selects the satellite receiver input, and then turns on the satellite receiver, but it takes almost five seconds to complete (requiring the user to point the remote in the right direction the entire time).

I am using a 2116 remote without an extender.

Thanks much to all who have labored so long to produce the current JP1 products. It is truly phenomenal what an average Joe like me can accomplish with very little monetary investment.

It's nothing specific to those particular phantom keys (DiscreteON and DiscreteOFF) and not magical, and doesn't actually know the true state of a device. But there is something called a ToadTog used to keep track of what state the device was last told to be, so you can use commands in a macro that may decently simulate discrete ON and OFF using just a power toggle.

The extender runs macros at the maximum possible speed (which I find annoyingly slow, but is much faster than the normal speed you described). Sometimes it's necessary to add back some delay to allow for devices that can't take the max speed, but even then you usually end up faster than without the extender.

Thanks. I actually read information about extenders after I posted last night, and I realize now that I need an extender to solve both problems. I didn't realize that an extender was just software. More to play with.

Thanks again! :D
