Our local cable company (Cox) uses Motorola digital boxes, which are packaged with UEI Navigator (68000B0[0-4]) remotes, custom programmed for the purpose. They have JP1 connectors, and their contents can be accessed with IR.

My questions are:
(1) Is it legal to modify these remotes with custom JP1 programs, including extenders?
(2) Is it legal to copy the contents of these remotes for inclusion in the programming of another unit (with suitable key remappings, of course)? What about for archival purposes?
