Home Theater Mode on URC8811 and TV/VID button

Post by sengsational »

This seems like it would be a common issue with a remote that has this home theater mode concept... how can I always make the tv/vid button work? (this is the button that switches inputs on the tv - video 1, video 2, etc)

Please help me out if I'm getting this wrong, but as I understand it, there are five 'button groups' on this remote (channel stuff, menu stuff, transport stuff, volume stuff, and pip stuff). I can assign each of these groups with exactly one device. This way, when I've selected home theater mode, I can run, for instance, my TV volume and the "MyHD" tuner / HD playback device without switching modes. So far so good. And it WORKS (I CAN load devices with IR402).

The problem comes in programming the tv/vid button. It's in the button group with the channel stuff. Most of those buttons are defined by loading the MyHD definitions (a NEC1 protocol device that some kind soul placed in the files area). But the tv/vid is Sony12 protocol EFC 239. I tried adding that to the definition, but it doesn't work.

So right now I have to switch to TV mode, use the tv/vid button to select the input I want, then switch back to home theater mode. I really just want to be able to leave it in home theater mode.

How can I do this?

Hi,

I think you will need to use a keymove. In IR, setup a keymove bound to the TV/VID button in whatever your HT channel device is. Then, under function to perforn, select TV (and whatever your setup code is) and set it to EFC 239. Then whenever in HT mode, pressing TV/VID will send the TV code 239.

I think that will work. I had similar things with my 8810 but I ended up using an extender which gave much greater flexibility with the button asignments.

I think that particular detail is the same with or without the extender, though in general the 8810's Home Theater mode is pretty flawed without the extender.

Russell is assuming your MyHD device doesn't have any tv/vid command (that you need). So create a KeyMove defining the MyHD device's tv/vid key to be the TV's tv/vid command. That means in either HT mode or MyHD mode the tv/vid key will be mapped to that function.

If the MyHD device does have its own tv/vid function that you need in MyHD mode, you obviously decided you don't need it in HT mode, so I assume is of less value than most functions, so it shouldn't be too much trouble to use something like shift tv/vid for it (if it exists at all).

Thank you very much kind folks! It worked!

At first, I tried to generate the key move in the keymap master spreadsheet, but when I tried to paste the text from the keymove code window on the setup tab of keymapmaster into the upgrade device window off of the IR Devices tab, it gave me 'invalid character in input'. Figuring that I'd follow directions set out in this thread, I then changed to just entering it directly into the Key Moves tab of IR. I wasn't sure of all of the definitions, but I must have got it right, because it works.

I'm not sure what an extender is, but I guess I can get-by without one since I've got it down to a few rules that my better half can understand it without much trouble:

1) Before hitting "power", always hit the device button first.
2) Hit "Home Theater" and you're in business for watching the MyHD (over the air, as well as recorded transport streams).
3) Hit "DVD" to get the transport keys to work with the DVD player (I think I need another couple of key moves to control TV volume while in DVD mode)

I'm a bit disappointed that I can't / haven't figured out how to do keymoves in keymap master. The one definition file that I'm using for the MyHD has two sections: "Upgrade Code" and "KeyMoves". Both of these sections are in the 'main window' on the setup tab (as opposed to the 'Key Move Code' window thats on the same tab, but down and to the right. When I created the keymove (that generated an error upon IR paste), it came out in that lower right window. Maybe I'm not supposed to paste from there, but it has the clipboard functionality, so I thought I was good. Maybe some day I'll actually understand some of this, but for now, the "bowl of clickers" has been moved to the closet! Thanks.
