Assign 1 device type to another device type key?

I'm considering purchasing one of the 8 device remotes, either a radio shack model or one of the newer oneforall units I saw at Walmart the other day (forgot to write down the model number).

Anyway, what I want to know is can you assign one device type to another device type key, such as making the CD key work a VCR instead?

If you can, can it be done with the normal programming on the remote itself or does it require using the JP1 interface?
