This looks like a nice setup..

Are you thinking of replacing Yahoo with this?

Very Happy Good luck Smile

Yes I am. I've been thinking it's time to move away from Yahoo for a while, and this format of forum seems to be very popular now. It's used at AVS, nerd-out.com and lots of other places.

I still need to figure out a file section though.

I like the basic format. Unless the "monitor this topic" means it will send me e-mail I will miss the e-mail part. I can however live with having to check the web site.

How do you plan to handle other forums like jp1-km. Will they remain on Yahoo or be incorporated here also.

I think that's exactly what the "monitor" function means. As you can see, I've created three levels of JP1 forum here, one for beginners (which we don't really have now), this one for general chat (which is the replacement for the current JP1 group) and other for advanced (which I'm taking to be the JP1-KM replacement).

But I am open to suggestions. Should there be even more variations? Instead of just one "advanced" forum, should there be one for discussion of extenders, one for program development, and others for other subjects?

I didn't want to dilute it with too many different forums, as it could be a drag for the dedicated experts who want to check all of them.

Any thoughts?

Actually, you just get an email that says there is a response to a thread you are monitoring. You don't get the actual contents in email; you read everything here. Not quite the same as Yahoo's email feature.

The only thing I can think of that's missing is a Diagnosis forum.

You're right, though, that it might be difficult for people (not just the experts) to keep track with too many forums. Perhaps you should just go with what you have for now and see what shakes out. Rome wasn't built in a day... Very Happy

Will the new server have the space and bandwidth to support one?

I set the Monitor function on and just got the notice like Mark said.

I agree, lets keep it simple.

I also suggest we start with it the way it is and you can build on that.

Looks good to me too. Definitely a better format than the Yahoo group, and I won't really miss the email feature since, with large number of posts, I didn't really use it.

As far as multiple forums, I agree that the way you have it now should be OK. But, of course, things will probably start to work themselves out once people start using this forum.

Good work Rob.

Regards,
Matt

It's a nice looking forum. Anything that takes us away from the spam-bate that is Yahoo! is a good thing IMHO, so I welcome the move. It is important to retain the files section and it would be helpful to have a section for JP1 related commerce (e.g., someone who sells cable parts could have an ad there, info on stores that carry JP1 remotes at a cheap price could be listed there, etc.).

I already like it better as I have used this type of forum before. I am guessing the old group will still be there to search the old messages, but will the files, diagnosis, pictures, etc continue to be there as well?

I, for one, will sorely miss the Yahoo groups email. I hate the idea of 1) having to go to the web to read messages and 2) not being able to save messages on my computer for future reference.

That is a big difference from Yahoo, but one I think you'll get used to over time.

Not a perfect solution (because of your aversion to getting on the web), but you can always bookmark relevant threads for future reference.

Most of these BBS programs have an email notification option, although they don't tend to do very well with formatting. I see that there's an option to be notified about replies to messages that we post, but I'm not sure if there's a way to get all messages forwarded. Rob: Is this something that's possible?

PS: I know the REAL reason why Rob is looking into moving the forum: Someone else on Yahoo is already using the handle [The]Robman.

I think it will be a tendency to create too many forms for skill levels, possibly one forum with skill ratings for the posted question [original], of course then you see some simple questions evolve to complex tecinal solutions, so that may not work either. I guess I am just thinking outloud.
