Another well-written and much needed guide! I think you should explain that the user also needs to download, unzip and copy the most recent decodeIR.dll in the windows\system directory (AND for good measure delete the decodeIR.dll in the directory where they put IR which is now at least one versions behind. )

In Win2K and probably other versions of Windows the dll in the IR.exe directory his has the effect of decoding learned commands in IR with the older dll despite the fact that the newer on is in the windows (or WinNT)\system. (Maybe that is some quirk in my settings because I always thought it was supposed to be the other way around.)

Also while they are at it is probably good to download IRTool in order to decode the Pronto hex in the discrete section at RC, too. I don't think that one takes more than a couple of extra sentences.

Rob, at the rate you are going, we "experts" will be consigned to being human Google machines and just answer all questions with hyperlinks to your fine documents :-)

Thanks Rob. I think you have greatly reduced the number of times that DecodeCCF users will need to ask for help.

But of course I have a tiny change to suggest.

On the "Text Import Wizard" Step 2, the user should also change "Text qualifier" to {none}.

It usually doesn't matter. I usually do txt open in Excel from a context menu choice which is faster and simpler but I don't know any way to set any of the wizard choices. On occasion (especially in CCF files for IR keyboards and similar things) the results are messed up and I need to start over with the wizard and set text qualifier to none. If you're using the wizard anyway, you might as well set that to begin with rather than waiting to see if not setting it messes any thing up.

Jon,
Good call re: DecodeIR, I have just added that. Regarding IRTool, I think I'll write that one up in a seperate document.

John,
I have never used the "Text Qualifier" box before, so I don't think it makes too big of a difference, but I have added it to the doc just in case.

Thanks guys.

It either makes no difference or it makes a VERY big difference that you might not notice. When it makes a difference it effectively truncates the results, because at the point it gets confused it buries the whole remainder of the file into the function name of the line that confused it. If you don't know to expect more lines you might not know they're missing unless you happen to click on the function name field of the last line.
