Hi! I'm new here and with jp1 remotes and i have easy question for you the pros
I understand the RCRP05BR has learning capabilities, right? Will this remote work out of the box for a Patriot Box Office? Or I will need to buy it the JP1 usb interface cable to program it on my own?
By the way, being 2015, is this a good remote or do you recommend another one?
Thanks in advance! |

Not out of the box, but you can program it without a cable using the following EFCs:
Code: | 00247 power

IMO, there are nicer models out there, depending on how much you want to customize. Some of my current favorites in the $3-$25 range are:
Xsight Color ($20 on ebay, includes cable)
Inteset INT-422 ($24)
OARUSB04G ($20 at Walmart, includes cable)
Atlas (backlit version, no learning, $8 on ebay)
Charter OCAP (no learning, $3 on ebay)
The RCA and Atlas have the advantage of having an extender. But that's irrelevant if you don't have a cable. Of the group above, the Xsight is by far the best value given its 15 devices and color LCD. The Charter and Atlas are pretty good values as well. |

Hi mate, thanks for your response!
As I understand the learning capabilities are useful, or I'm wrong? And when you say includes cable, is the jp1 cable what you mean?
By the way i search ebay for the xsight color and didn't found it, is that the right name?
Thanks in advance! |

Learning is useful, yes, but not as important in a JP1 remote since there are other ways to load new commands.
Cable included means the cable you need for programming, not necessarily JP1. The Xsight and OARUSB04G don't use JP1 cables but do use JP1 software.
Also search for Nevo C2 and ARRX15G. Some are missing the cable, but it's a very common one you probably already have, USB Mini-B.
Although the Xsight is a great value and feature rich, you may not care for the size and bulk. It took me several years to warm up to it myself. It also goes through batteries quickly. So I use rechargeables in mine. Check out some reviews before you decide, but ignore the parts about the software, as that's outdated now:

Great! I thought jp1 were the only cables allow for customization. I'm a newbie with this
Yes you are right, I think both nevo c2 and xsight will be rather bigger for me and my wife.
But I like the OARUSB04G you mention, not only for the better size, but because i understand that with the mini usb cable i can program it with jp1 soft, right? And it has also learning just in case? I also see is backlight, and that it doesn't have extender.
As it seems you know a lot about this model, what are the advantages/disvantages of it compare to the others (or to my first option that was the RCRP05BR)? Maybe not having so many buttons will be a problem?
Thanks for your time! |

Yes, the OAR is learning, backlit and comes with its own cable for JP1 programming. Very nice quality remote and well laid out.
The RCA can do far more, but is not backlit, does not include a cable and has smaller buttons (but more of them).
With an extender, the RCA can do 8 devices (or unlimited with multiplexing), 5 functions per button, state tracking, key group mapping, nested macros and very fast macros.
The OAR can do 4 devices, 2 functions per button on some buttons, limited key group mapping but none of the other stuff. But if all you need is a basic remote, its fine, and has better ergonomics than the RCA. One thing to note is that the skip buttons are dual purpose: they skip when pressed briefly and ffwd/rewind when held down longer. |

Great! Just to be sure, the usb cable that connects the remote to a computer is a normal mini usb/usb cable, right?
By the way, i'm reading this thread (OARUSB04G vs. URC6440)
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15333
Both seems similar, but the URC6440 has an extender, among many other things it says that expands the remote from four devices to eight and from two combo modes to four. Would you recommend that model instead? |

The Xsight uses Mini-B, the OAR uses Micro-B, both common types. If you buy new, the cable(s) are included.
In the US we don't have much choice since only the OAR is available in our market. In other parts of the world, you should be able to find its twin, the 6440. If you have a choice, the 6440 is definitely the one you should get. |
