I'm rebuilding my client HTPC and I have a question about IR receivers.
My current/old/outgoing HTPC has a internally mounted IR module that is built with IRTrans firmware and works with IRTrans software. Although a bit crude, I was able to program the IRTrans software to recognize any IR signals I wanted. With a plugin, Eventghost will talk with IRTrans and I am able to set any signal to perform whatever functions I wish. In my case, I primarily use SageTV, but I've also got codes setup for windows specific commands, and other playback software.
Now the new HTPC was purchased with a Streamcom IR module http://www.streacom.com/products/irrc/. I debated whether to get this or not because many people complain about the limitations of this IR module. There is a some remapping software, which I have yet to play with and hope will offer some of the same functionality I've used with the IRtrans module (http://www.streacom.com/news-item/irrc-remote-remapping-software/). I do have my doubts, but as I said, I haven't played with it much yet.
I've also, kinda on a whim purchased a FLIRC unit http://flirc.tv/. This will certainly be capable of recognizing pretty much any IR signal I wish, but at its core, this thing emulates a USB keyboard. I suspect that I can get this working for my needs, but it also seems to fall a bit short of what I'm used to with IRTrans.
My question here is pretty much, what IR receivers are available that allow computer customization within windows? Most IR modules simply emulate the windows MCE remote, but do they all or some provide remapping/programming software? Obviously USBIRT is an easy recommendation, and I probably should have bought one already. I clearly have to invest some with the products that I've already purchased here. I'm sure I can make it work well enough, and truth be told, I probably don't need many more signals that one would get from a standard MCE remote. But I just wanted to bounce this off somewhere else to see if there is some other options I might consider before I invest a ton of time on this.
Thanks,
Bryan |

You may have more success in a forum such as Eventghost or Promixis (Girder).
Since a few weeks I use an Arduino nano with TSOP32238, with firmware a slight modification of the Arduino thread in this forum. It decodes NEC1 and RC5 signals directly, and is connected to a small Linux box (Alix) with USB. running a java program, "dispatcher". The dispatcher is configured with an XML file, dispatching received IR signals to TCP/UDP/HTTP packets, shell commands, or similar. Presently not published, will publish later this year.
