I have (Well it works but it is no longer JP1 programmable and yes my cable is still good ) a RadioShack 15-2116 JP1 remote and I see a couple of them listed on the worlds famous auction site. I want to buy a JP1 remote (I have the simple JP1 Parallel cable EEPROM cable I believe) but before I buy one is there a better JP1 remote out there that will work with my antique Smile cable? I also have a Logitech Harmony that is my main remote but I just want the JP1 remote as a backup or a testing tool as Logitech makes it a PITA to add a custom Hex or pronto code. What I have been doing before it broke was adding a code to the RS remote a learn it to the harmony

That and the URC-8910 were the pinnacle of JP1 EEPROM remotes. The 15-2117 and URC-9910 are identical to the 2116 and 8910 but add RF. You don't need RF, but it widens your options a little. That said, you can get a new JP1.3 remote and cable better than the 2116 for a total of about $16. So if all those old remotes are more than that, may as well upgrade.

Yeah I see that the 15-2116 is going for around $20 with a best offer option
Can you name some good models of JP1.3 remotes? If I can get a new cable also for under $20 that would be great (Preferably a USB one)

RCA RCRP05BR, $8 Amazon. Cheap cables are in the FTDI thread. eBay, about $8.

I found a JP1 remote on eBay (URC-8910) for $6 so I bought that remote
However my cable is Parallel and I have an extra computer with the parallel port however I want a USB cable (So I can program my remote with my main computer) I know I can get the FTDI cables really cheap but my question is now how does This adapter work? and is it compatible with any USB FTDI cable?

Works beautifully and is compatible with all the FTDI cables I've used. There is also a forum member selling a nicer one made by JP1 hardware guru Tommy Tyler: http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=112407#112407

Look for an old Kevin Timmerman thread to see how it actually works. In Remote Master, it is seamless. Just auto detect your interface.
