My last PC with an LPT port died, now what? (New remote?)

So I recently upgraded my 7 year old Optoma projector to a newer model. I was hoping that the remote control codes were the same for the new projector, but alas, no.
So then I was like, no problem, learn the remote using my 8811 or my 8910, fetch the learned codes from the remote, and upgrade both remotes for the new device. Only one problem, I'm running around the house, and lo and behold, I don't own a single PC with and LPT port anymore (my ancient Dell that had one died last year).
So now I'm stuck with a decision:
1) Buy a PCIx LPT port adapter and use my existing JP1 cable
2) Build a serial version of the JP1 cable. (I am an electrical engineer and work for a company that does electronic test so this is a trivial task)
3) Buy a JP1 USB cable (seems like these have dried up)
or
4) Replace my JP1 remotes with a new style
5) Switch to a Logitech type remote
My question for you guys:
Are there any reasonably priced NEW MANUFACTURE JP1/JP1.x remotes available for a reasonable price? I would stock up if I could find something for $25 and just buy a lifetime supply of remotes. I'm afraid that one day my pair of JP1 remotes will die and I won't be able to replace them.
What about the OARN08G remotes? I see they have a JTAG port in them. Has anyone done any work with them to see if the memory is locked down? This would be an interesting experiment.
Lastly (and I know this is probably a taboo topic around here) has anyone jumped ship to a new system that is not JP1 that they've been happy with? Being able to support obscure devices will remain a priority for me. I have an HD-DVD player, a couple of NAD components, and use a home theater PC with remote codes stolen from a DVICO tuner card. As you can see these will not be preprogrammed into any universal remote control and would have to be learned.
Ideas? Thanks in advance!
