I recently came across an old One For All URC-6050 8, I have the manual and it boasts being upgradeable (It even says so on the remote itself) My question is how is the upgrade done? I think this remote is from around the year 1994. The remote has the holes for a 3-pin header so that is obviously not JP1 as JP1 needs 6 pins. My question is there anything I can do with this remote?

Here are some pictures of the remote in question

That's a REALLY ancient remote, so no, it's not JP1 compatible.

How does the upgradeable part of this remote work then?

It may have an EEPROM onboard and I can see that it has a spot of the old 3-pin connector that was used on the pre-JP1 models. Long before we started the JP1 group, there was a small group of hackers that were doing things with these remotes. I have archives of some of the pages that they created on this site.

Here's two to start with:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ziggr/ - Zig's Amazing IR Remote Control Page
http://www.hifi-remote.com/wasser/ - John Wasser's Unofficial One-For-All Universal Remote Control Pages

We've never spent any time on the old remotes here, so I can't give you any first hand info on what to do with yours, though I would be interested to know how you make out if you try.

I have several of this model, and others like it, in boxes in my basement.
