questions on macro and shift

1. from within the add macro dialogue box in IR, how do i setup a macro for a shift on a number key? at the top, there is a box to the right of the select bound key box and in the key entry box at the bottom, there is a command to add shift, and another to ins shift?

2. now for the really stupid question-after setting up the shift macro(s) and uploading to the remote via IR, how do i invoke the macro on the remote keypad? is it "shift" (in my case with a RS 2116 the green "P" button) and then the "key", or the "key" and then "shift" or do i try and press both at the same time?

what i am trying to is change channels on my OTA STB which uses two rooftop antennae and an A-B switch. so for channel 2, i want to use a macro that would change the channel on the box to 2 and for the a-b switch to use 'A'. the a-b is an auxillary device with the 2 keys moved to the STB which is a CBL for IR purposes.(i am assuming that i cannot simply attach the macro to the digit "2" since i need the numerical keys for other devices. if macros were device specific instead of global i would be done already.)

It's that box on the top, you mentioned. It is used to put the macro you are defining onto a shifted key.

Those other two are to put shifted keys into the body of the macro.

Not at the same time. For shifting non digits, press and release P, then press the key you want shifted.

To shift digits without an extender you must press P twice before the digit. (With an extender shifting a digit is the same as shifting an ordinary key).

DSM (device specific macros) is also easier with an extender (but possible without one).

I'm rather new at JP1, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that to shift a number key you need to press the shift key twice. This is because shift and 3 digits are codes to do things, like a keymove and stuff, so you need to let the remote know you really want to shift the key, so you press it twice. Try that and see if it helps. (I'm pretty certain I need to press shift twice when using shifted numbers with my 2116)

Actually, to invoke the programming commands ("keymoves and stuff"), you press and hold the shift key (referred to as a "long press") until the LED blinks twice, followed by the 3-digit command (i.e. 994 for key moves).

In an unextended remote, pressing "shift and 3 digits" tells the remote you're trying to do a direct entry of an EFC for the active device. So, if you press shift-1, the remote waits for 2 more digits (or displays an long single flash of the LED when any other key is pressed, indicating an error). By pressing shift twice, the remote will process the next key (provides it's numeric) as its shifted version to invoke the macro or key move assigned to it.

thanks for replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(i had no idea that you must press the shift key twice for digits.)

the rs 2116's shift "P" key is at the top, so i ended up using the device keys instead (one less keystroke per action anyway)

thanks to all for the help the last 10 days and it was all worth it to pack up 7 remotes in a box in favor of the 2116 and JP1.
