I have successfully created four device upgrade or mods to upgrades for the URC-8820 B00 and am now ready to take the leap into the world of extenders. My progress so far:
Read Capn Trips' Beginner's Extender FAQ (several times)
Read Vicky's URC-8820 Extender ReadMe.htm (several times)
Read Vicky's ToadTog.txt (several times)

Placed the extinstall.exe and associated RDFs in the IR folder.
Set the directory for IR to find the hex file.

Selected Merge Using Extinstall from the File Menu and provided a Save name. Promptly get a POP UP message window that says,
Extinstall returned Errorcode 128

Now what ???
The unextended IR file is here:

I used extinstall, and it worked fine. I posted the IR file

http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=9350

But not quite sure what's going on with the 128 error. I'm wondering if you remembered to download the support libraries

I do know that RMIR Alpha whatever the number is at the moment does a great job on Extinstall.

OK, great! I did not remember (or know I needed) to get the support libraries, BUT there is no mention of needing support libraries in any of the documents I mentioned so as a beginner I am somewhat handicapped. Does that need to be added for us newbies?

Thanks too, for the IR file. I downloaded it and will get more educated checking it out.

You may need the support files for Extinstall

Thanks! Now it works!

Since I am not a C++ programmer and this PC that has a serial port is loaded with Win2K, I did not have a clue that it needed C++ run-time files.

BTW the last time I did any programming it was in FORTRAN.

Now, on to fixing up the keymoves and macros to do what I want to do. I bet I'll be back....
