Xbox (original) wireless handset problem

My kids have one of the old Xbox units and one of the wireless handset remotes (similar to the one pictured below) isn't working correctly. There are two joy-stick buttons on the remote and apparently the one in the upper left corner is stuck in the "down" position. Has anyone had any similar experience and if so, were you able to fix it?
