JP1 Remotes

Obvious noob here:
I've played with both RM and KM, but don't understand what the heck I'm doing to even get started.

I opened KM, selected my remote (RS 15-2117), device, and entered the setup code.
What I don't understand:
How do I know what type of button code to select?
Under protocol name, my manufacturer isn't listed (Hughes)?
What are the device codes?

Also, I've noticed in both RM & KM there seems to be a "shift" key or function. Is there something I don't know because my 15-2117 doesn't have a shift key.

Since you don't know what the device codes are you may have to learn some buttons from the original remote and decode them by downloading the remote to IR. If you do know from experimenting with device codes in the remote what 1 or more of the working codes are you can use the devices4.xls to get the button codes EFC/OBC and other parms. The spreadsheet can be found in the jp1 files area which you can get to using the link below my name.

On the 2117 the "shift button" is the Green P or commonly known as setup. Once short press of this will execute what is on the shifted version of the next button pressed.

But I do know the "setup code", it's in the remote already. Do I have to download that first so I have it in a txt file? Also, how do I use the Devices4 spreadsheet, is there a tutorial for that?

OK, lets take a step back and start over again.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Are you trying to add support for a device that your remote doesn't currently support, or are you just trying to add some functionality that the builtin support doesn't provide?

What is the device you are trying to control? If the remote provides partial control of that device using a builtin setup code, what is that setup code?

I just bought this 15-2117 yesterday for the RF capability. I have modulated channels and audio throughout. So, I'm looking to control this with the most WAF and be able to just go into a file and switch keys around. Also, I'm aware that w/jp1 I can proram "unprogramable" keys.

I will say that I haven't built my cable yet, but wanted to get a jump start by getting the programming ready to go. I'm looking for creating macros and possibly gaining control of a device that I don't have total control of (Lutron Spacer System). So, just to get started I wanted to "map out" my DTivo unit (Hughes w/setup code 1142) and another Hughes Sat w/code 0749. Once I understand this, I'm sure I could move on.

The Devices 4 spreadsheet is pretty straight forward. On the TYPE line you put in the type of device like TV. On the CODE line you enter the device code that you know like 60 for a samsung TV. If the spreadsheet knows the device and code it will present you with everything you need to enter into KM or RM. You can actually cut & pasted columns E & F to KM or RM if you like.

This language is called "free". If you like you can call it "greek" but soon it will turn to "easy". By the way, if you have not gone thru the beginners tutorial it would help.

In Devices4, there is no SAT device type? I entered my "setup code" and tried to match that up with either TV or Cable. Please...what should I enter for a Hughes DTive with RS setup code 1142? I really want to understand this!

Nils: Yes, I do understand this is "free" and appreciate every effort put forth. I didn't expect this to be simple from the get go. Just trying to understand.

Macros are programmed in IR, not KM/RM.

If your devices are already well controlled by your remote, you probably won't be using RM/KM to add support for them. You may use a few keymoves just to add missing function. Keymoves are also done in IR.

In order to add missing function by keymove, you do need to know the advanced codes for your device. Start by looking through http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/adv-codes.shtml

I you do end up needing a device upgrade to support your device, don't worry that the device upgrade you download is designed for a different remote. Once you've loaded it into KM/RM, just change the remote, and then check the buttons to make sure you like the assignments.

Having said all that, there are some device upgrades that you might be able to use.

For your DTiVo: Philips-TiVo-2116.txt (Don't worry, all non-Sony TiVos use the same IR signals).

I didn't find a device upgrade for your Hughes SAT receiver, but the advanced code list can be found at http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?sat_0749

For your Lutron, there are a few different Lutron upgrades in the Misc folder. One of them might help.

As long as you have the codes and do not want to change what buttons they are assigned to or just use IR to add missing button codes via keymoves then correct, all you need is IR.

Phantom buttons and Discrete buttons are simply buttons that you can assign functions to to be used in macros. Remember, that phantoms and discrete buttons do not have a physical button you can press to execute them so they are only good in macros.

db-09 0 db-14 are virtual devices that are good for assigning special protocols and virtual devices.
