M son hadn't trying playing a CD in his Samsung SCM6550 mini system for a while, then when he tried to recently the sound kept cutting out.
The tuner still works, so the speakers and amp are fine, but the CD sound drops out. Could this be caused by dust or something in the CD player, and if so, how do you go about cleaning it? _________________ Rob

Cleaning only helps a small percentage of the time but mini-systems do draw a lot of dust in with the air flow that amplifiers generate.
First, I would try wiping the top of the lens off with a dry cue-tip.
Failing that, try a light blast with an air duster around the lens.
Lastly, you could try removing the shield around the optics and wiping the bottom of the lens with the cue-tip. (usually after removing some of the cotton to make it smaller. (not necessarily easy or even possible in some cases)
Cleaning disks do not do anything useful. _________________ Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now. |

Here's what I did. First I opened the thing up, which was an interesting experience in of itself as I've never tried to dismantle a mini-system before, so knowing which piece is removable is a trial and error endeavor.
Anyway, once I cleared a path to the CD player, I used a hair dryer to blow away the big dust particles, and I did see some go flying. Then, before attempting to dismantle the CD player itself, I tested it and it worked. _________________ Rob

Mini-systems (CD and DVD) are one of the few optical devices that cleaning can help with because they suck a lot of dust through them.
Since the simplest attempt got it going, you can keep the other techniques in reserve for the time it happens again. _________________ Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now. |
