Hi Folks,

I'm sure this is listed somewhere, but I'll be jiggered if I can find it. How do I convert the Sony codes shown in the tables into a 5-digit EFC that I can enter into a remote manually using the 994 function?

As an example: I have found the the EFC I need is Sony 16.32 Code 22 (BD). How do I convert this into the 5-digit code entered manually into the remote like the 61385 I used to select the DVD input?

Before you can enter an EFC to create a desired signal, you need to find a setup code that will let you generate the right device code. Then you'll need to determine if that setup code is in your remote.

Therefore, we need to know which remote(s) you are trying to program and if you've already programed some EFCs, which setup code were you using?

My process for finding EFC's is to setup RM with a upgrade with the same parameters that the the built in code uses and then enter the data for the new signal that I found through a learn, or from an upgrade in the file section, or from a CCF file in remote central. Its important to set RM up for your remote, because if it uses 5 digit remotes, your 5 digit EFC will be displayed. Some remotes can't send 5 digit EFC's. If your remote is one of those, only 3 digit EFC's will be shown.

Well, in your particular example, I think you won't be able to find an EFC to send 16.32, unless you have already uploaded an upgrade with 16.32 as the device.subdevice pair.

Here's some explanation. Sony IR signals can be 12, 15, or 20 bits in length. Sony 12 and 15 have enough bits to specify one device number and 1 function number. Your EFC=61385 for DVD is a Sony 15 signal, and 61385 translates to Device 48 (that's AV2 mode in the receiver), function 125. I found that out by using RemoteMaster and loading a Sony receiver upgrade from the File Section here, changing the remote to one that uses 5 digit EFCs, and then entering 61385 into the EFC5 column. RM immediately displays 48 in the device column and 125 in the OBC column.

Device 16.32 is a Sony 20 IR signal. I used the Lookup Tool (link at the top of this page) to see that there are no built-in setup codes that can send a Sony 16.32 device number. How did I do that? First, understand that IR signals are sent by the remote using an executor, a subroutine that takes some input data and turns it into the pattern of light flashes. In an unfortunate historical usage, JP1ers frequently loosely refer to an executor as a protocol. Doing a Protocol Search in the Lookup Table shows that there are 6 possible Sony executors, but only 3 of these are capable of sending a Sony 20 IR signal: Sony 20, Sony 12/20 Combo, and Sony 12/15/20 Combo.

Under Sony 20 or Sony 12/20 Combo, I found no instances of 16.32. The same is true of the Sony 12/15/20 Combo, although it is a pecularity of this executor that only the allowed subdevices are displayed, and any device number can be used. As it happens, there are no instances of 32 as an allowable subdevice.

There is however, one instance where subdevice 40 is allowed, and that may work for you, since 16.32 and 16.40 are grouped together. Maybe 16.40 is AV2. It is however only available in an obscure setup code--Audio 2172. That setup code is only available in the OneForAll URC-8820N/10820N and the RCA RCRP05B remotes.

So if you have one of those remotes, and the device 16.40 might work, you could find the necessary EFC by: Start RM, begin a new upgrade using the Sony 12/15/20 executor, enter exactly the same subdevice numbers as are shown in the Lookup Tool, and then on the functions tab, select Sony 20, enter 16 as the device, and select 40 as the subdevice. Finally enter 22 in the OBC column.

I did that and RM displayed 35272 as the necessary EFC.
