OK, thanks Rob.
I'll get both remotes (or even three).
Already printed out a look-up learning chart cheat-sheet... :)

You will have access to the original remote, a JP1 cable, a learning remote and (I presume) a computer. You live locally so take the source remote round to your place rather than trying to learn everything onto one or two remotes, take them home only to find that you haven't learned correctly the Power button, for instance.
I'd use the 8910 (simply because I have one and I'm used to it). I'd then learn, decode and write down the codes in several small batches to minimize error and make sure I got all the codes.
When I learn a new remote I first lay the source remote on my scanner and then paste the image into a spreadsheet with a list of the buttons. I then learn the "obvious" ones like power, mute, volume, channels, digits to their "proper" buttons. I upload to IR, check I've got them all then wipe the learning and learn the remaining buttons back onto the digit keys. Trying to learn everything to its ideal button is, IMHO, likely to lead to errors.
It's already been mentioned that you can't learn to the "Exit" button and I'm not sure that learning to the "Fav" button is a good idea either. |

I believe COM-SKIP is another restricted button. _________________ Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Most of the buttons have logical equivalents on the 8811 and 8910, so there's only a few that you'll need to account for with a list:
Exact Matches:
Ch +/-
Vol +/-
Mute
numeric
Menu
Exit
Info
Pause
Close Matches (Strong / URC-8811):
Standby = Power
OK = Select
Recall = Prev
EPG = Guide
TV/Radio = TV/VID
Page+ = F.FWD
Page- = F.REW
Suggestions for some:
red = L1
green = L2
yellow = L3
blue =L4
Format = Enter
That just leaves these two, which you could put anywhere:
Fav = M1
Zoom = M2 _________________ Rob

Unfortunately, the owner of the original remote has elected to "wait while I learn", and it will not be at my home either, which will put a bit of pressure on me... :)))
But you gave me a good idea - I might take my JP1 cable and my laptop with IR installed, so I can backup the "learned" signals onto the laptop if I run out of memory in URCs.
Also, thanks everyone for a lot of useful tips - maybe I should also take the webcamera with me too, so you all could watch me "learning" online... :-)))
Seriously, guys - I appreciate your help.
And my understanding is that URCs learn into NVRAM, don't they? Meaning that the short-term power loss is not going to wipe out the data.
Not intending to change the batteries, but God knows what can happen in transport on my way home. |

Yes the Learn will be stored in EEPROM. The learn will remain there for YEARS without the battery in.
If you are doing this away from your normal environment, be sure not to be too close windows, and try to avoid flouresent light. Low light is going to give you higher quality learns. _________________ Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

If you won't be given the time to download the learns in order to verify them while you're there, maybe you could at least try them out on the device itself to make sure that they all work. _________________ Rob

OK, I am done.
Used three remotes, just to make sure that I will not run out of memory.
(Later I saw that it would probably have all fitted in one URC, but at the "learning" time I decided to better be safe that sorry)
So, I used one 8811 and two 8910 (I call them old and new to tell apart).
The guy didn't have much time, so I wasn't able to back up learned data to a laptop on the spot, but I have done that now, after I came back.
I have also tried one or two learned buttons on the SRT5020 device, and they worked.
Here is the saved IR files for each of the three remotes. The learned button maps are shown below:
For 8811:
(SRT5020 = URC8811)
---------------------
Ch (+) = Up Button
Ch (-) = Down Button
Vol (+) = Right Button
Vol (-) = Left Button
Mute = Mute
numeric 1 = numeric 1
numeric 2 = numeric 2
numeric 3 = numeric 3
numeric 4 = numeric 4
numeric 5 = numeric 5
Standby = Power
OK = Select
For 8910 new:
(SRT5020 = URC8910 new)
---------------------
Ch (+) = Ch (+)
Ch (-) = Ch (-)
Vol (+) = Vol (+)
Vol (-) = Vol (-)
Standby = Power
OK = Select
Menu = Menu
Exit = M3
Info = Info
Pause = Pause
Recall = Prev
EPG = Guide
TV/Radio = TV/VID
Page+ = F.FWD
Page- = F.REW
red = L1
green = L2
yellow = L3
blue =L4
Format = Enter
Fav = M1
Zoom = M2
For URC8910 old:
(SRT5020 = URC8910 old)
---------------------
numeric 0 = numeric 0
numeric 5 = numeric 5
numeric 6 = numeric 6
numeric 7 = numeric 7
numeric 8 = numeric 8
numeric 9 = numeric 9 |

In the future, you should post files in our diagnosis section.
I created a KM sheet
Strong 5020
Is this a Satellite box? _________________ Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

OK, understood. Sorry.
vickyg2003 wrote: | Is this a Satellite box? |
No, it's not. It's just a standard definition Digital STB.
Thank you, V.
Loaded it in the KM9.20, changed the remote type to URC8811, and left the setup code to 0000 as it was in your upgrade.
Pasted to IR and uploaded it to my 8811 - it does NOT work. (Tried to assign it to a different buttons (SAT or CBL) - all the same, it doesn't work.
Returned to KN9.20, and changed the setup code to 2010. Device is obviously URC8811. Uploaded to 8811. Still doesn't work.
Any ideas why?
(Note that the learned buttons work just fine, from both 8811 and 8910new remotes) |

My mistake, I had the values as EFCs instead of OBCs. Fixed now, changed the setup code to 2010, moved the upgrade to the digital STB area. _________________ Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Yep. That's fixed it.
Solved.
Thanks everyone for all your help. The topic can now be closed.
Just one little thing: the correct device name is Strong SRT5020.
vickyg2003, you may want to change the file name/description, just for punctuality and maybe for the forum's search engine. Thanks. |

vickyg2003,
Sorry for yet another message about the file description, but it is SRT5020, not STR5020 (even though the latter would make more sense considering the manufacturer's name :)
Please correct. |
