JP1 Remotes

Please help. I just purchased 2 15-2117 remotes form a member of this board and when they arrived Monday one of them had batteries in it and worked fine I moved the batteries into the other one and it was working fine both would control my cable box even though they had different codes set. That is all I had time for Monday night and did not get back to them until last night. This is where I started having problems. The remote that I left the batteries in had every segment on the display on and none of the buttons worked. I replaced the batteries with new ones and still the same thing. I then replaced the batteries with the ones in my 15-2116 and still the same thing. So I left the batteries out of the unit over night and this morning when I replace the batteries still no good all segments are on. I have notices that the screen flashes like this when you change the batteries but goes to normal mode in a couple of seconds. Also just to see I connected the remote to the JP! Cable and was able to download the eeprom so at least that seams to be working. I guess what I am asking has anyone else run into this before? Is this a hardware of software thing and how can I correct this.

That's unusual, but here's a few things you can try...

1) Make sure that none of the buttons are trapped in the ON position.
2) Take the batteries out and press some buttons with them out. Also, short the battery terminals together if possible.
3) Try re-inserting the batteries and see if it's working. If you get it working, so a hard MFR RESET, instructions below:

Still not luck I shorted the batteries leads together and pushed every button and still nothing. I also used IE to over write the memory with 00 and the screen cleared when I pushed a button the display showed “MEM FAULT” I reloaded the original image form the working remote and the screen went back to all segments on. Also when I press a button with the screen filled I do not get a red led when I cleared everything out and pressed a button the led came on then displayed the mem fault error.

Any other ideas.

Best I can think of now is to load zeroes again, then when the MEM FAULT message appears, do a hard reset using the instructions I linked to earlier.

I fixed it. It turns out that during the manufacturing process some solder got on the contact for the "AUX" button it had some flux between it and was not making contact until I pressed that button and then it was stuck. It was the suggestion from Rob to check the buttons the guided me to open the remote and look at the contact. once removed the remote is working fine now. I think that it is funny that this thing has been sitting there just waiting for someone to press the button since 2002. Again thanks for the help.
