You'd have to get way more specific than that.
Do you want to include OEM remotes or only our JP1? Do you want , In-Use JP1 remotes or do we include the remotes we hoard as backups incase one of in-service remotes dies?

If you're talking about "in service" remotes, then the answer is 4, I have a Radio Shack 15-1994 to work the main system, a Radio Shack 15-2116 to work the bedroom TV and a One For All URC-6131 to work the downstairs TV. We also have a junky TV set up with an Xbox and the OEM remote for that TV is still there.
If you're also talking about remotes in boxes in the basement, then the answer is in the hundreds. I've got a box of OEM remotes somewhere down there, plus I've got boxes and boxes of old OFA and RS remotes.

Wow you really are at the other end of the spectrum! I have 1, in-service remote for every 100sqft of living space down here!
And it seems to me the little crowes are boys. How do multiple males live in the same household without their own remote?

Well, when the kids are watching their own shows, they take turns. One kid will get the remote and will pick a show and skip the commercials, then the next kid gets it and the process continues...
When we're all watching a show together, I usually get the remote. Sometimes one of the kids will have it, but if they fail to skip a commercial quickly enough, they'll usually get told to give me the remote and I'll take over.
If Lisa is the watching a show all by herself, then we let her have the remote!

You're right Vicky, I should have been more specific! I'm including the OEM remotes, and "back ups".
For example, I have seven "universals" for the main living area (and three OEMs). The kids' rooms each have two "cable remotes" (fully programmed) and the 3-4 OEMs.
Our bedroom has three universals (two Comcast and one Atlas for night viewing, plus the three OEMs).
So, total count is the question.
So, with the "hundreds" mentioned, my forty looks paltry! |

| 8.3 Kg, including piddly little media player remotes, PC TV card remotes etc. I couldn't be bothered to actually count them. If you include my HP LX200 "pocket" PC and PDAs then the count (and weight) goes up considerably. |

12 x JP1 remotes in use
1 x Harmony 525 in use by SWMBO - 
6 x JP1 remotes in office for learning/testing/backup - these tend to be older remotes/missing or broken parts/battery covers etc...
"Archived" OEM remotes - certainly over 50 - too lazy to count them, and don't have the facility to weigh them - although I definitely think that would be an easier metric 
edited: because I forgot the Harmony
(I'd really like to forget the Harmony...)

Gee, you guys got me beat by a mile
I have three remotes "in use" one in each room where there is a TV.
I ahve the OEM remotes for everyting in a box in the garage, no need to have them anywhere.
And a half-dozen or so remotes in my office where I write, build, debug and test extenders.

As I read this, I realize the ones I forgot (and I think everyone else did too!)
I guess we should include the Stereo/Audio equipment, ceiling fans, garage doors, and as I just found in the drawer, the digital picture frame remotes! I guess the car keys count too! I forgot all the things my car key does.
Bottom line, remotes are more a part of our life than I realized! |

I thought that we were limiting ourselves to IR remotes
RF remotes include two car remotes for each of two cars, four garage door opener remotes, and one ceiling fan/light fixture.
Although I did omit a digital picture frame IR remote.
Does anybody have any of those original TV remotes that sent an inaudible SONIC signal to make your TV's channel-changer mechanically rotate?

I'm not sure they existed outside the US - maybe they did - I don't remember one from the UK. I remember watching them being used on US TV shows like Mr Ed and Lucy and feeling jealous...
This page says there was even a prior type of remote to that, a "Flashmatic" - using ordinary light beams - it's quite interesting to read the history.
I DO remember my first remote for AV equipment was a wired remote that plugged into my VCR and did Channel/Transport.
I fed the wire under the carpet and up to my chair arm, and provided I watched TV through the VCR I could do everything I needed to except volume and power without getting up.
I thought it was the height of decadence at the time. |

Wow! I remember those hard wired VCR remotes too. At the time I thought those were the coolest things!
I also remember the family's first TV remote, for an old console Zenith. What I remember is the loud "clicks" for each button push, hence the birthof the name "clickers".... |
