Does anybody know whether discrete codes for power on/of exist?
And if so, what are they? Could save a lot of time trying.

There don't seem to be discrete codes available, I tested all codes from 0 to 124 and didn't find any more codes than available on the original remote, not even duplicate code/key mappings.

There is a way of achieving discrete on/off codes by modifying the WDTV firmware to allow for additional apps (e.g. WDLXTV) and installing eiri for remapping remote key functions.

I was looking for discrete on/off codes for the WD TV (1st gen), too, but decided it was not worth the time.

I measured the power consumption to be 6.5W (on) and 6.2-6.3W (standby) [that is with 1 USB memory stick and 1 USB LAN adapter connected].
Not worth the trouble IMHO.

The next thing you might consider is building a remote controlled power switch (opposed to going into standby) as shown here:
