I'm looking for a way to keep the backlight always on with an 8811. I know the extender will do that, but I'm trying to avoid the extender (read: I'm afraid). Ideally, I'd like to put a small SPDT switch on the side of the housing, to turn the backlight on and off, not timed, and with the other functions still available while the light is on. Any ideas?

It's hard to imagine how someone might be unafraid to cut a trace on the PCB and tack solder to 3 places and modify the case to install a switch etc. yet be afraid to try the extender.

I hope you understand that the extender is trivial to uninstall if you get it wrong and/or just don't like it (unlike a lot of Windows software that can be easily unistalled ONLY if you installed it correctly).

I don't think the extender provides for an unlimited duration backlight (I could be wrong). Maybe the extended duration it provides is enough. I'd think unlimited would be a bad idea (whether done in hardware or extender). I assume you don't want to modify the extender's source code to get unlimited.

If you really want to do it in hardware, I could look up which pin from the micro is P2.7 (backlight control on the 8811). But you can't see the exact pin positions (because of the epoxy), so tracing back from the light circuit is probably easier anyway.

I think the signal is active high. But I'm not 100% sure. I expect the easiest place to get a high signal (for the other side of the switch) would be found by tracing the micro's power pin. Then I'm not sure whether you'd prefer to switch between micro control and power or between gnd and power.
