JP1 Remotes

This must be common but I don't know where to start. I'm in the middle of completeting an upgrade to my 8910 right now.

Once it is done, I'll want to set up the device keys so that they set everything correctly for using whatever device you selected (I'm assuming I do this with macros?), in addition I'll also want a few macros just for me to have easier access to some of my home theater settings that I endlessly tweak.

I can imagine that this will all work very well for the wife, except if she hits one of my home theater macro buttons by accident. At that point she'd be lost. How would I solve this easiest? I was thinking I should have a macro that somehow sets everything back to normal, but I don't know where to start to do that? Thanks!

I believe that you'll have to use an extender in order to bind macros to your device keys.

One way to handle your special home theater setting macros is to bind them to shifted keys, making them MUCH more unlikely to be hit by accident. A shifted key is activated by pressing and releasing the SET button, and then pressing the desired button within a short time of having pressed shift. Since the SET button is somewhat recessed, it is pretty hard to press accidentally, and on top of that she would also have to press one of your home theater macro buttons within that short time.

Actually, I think the URC-8910 is the same as the 15-2116 in this regard, I believe it let's you program macros to the device buttons even without an extender.

Thanks guys. I wouldn't have thought of the shift idea, that will probably work great.

And if you want to get really fancy, you could hide these macros even more completely by using the double press protocol and setting things up so that the shift key will only act as a shift key if you hit it twice. Probably overkill, though.

Since this is the beginners' forum, maybe I can risk a possibly stupid (and barely related) question: what is meant by 'shift' keys on the 8910? How do I press a shift key on that remote?

It's the SET key.

Apply pressure using one of your fingers in a downward direction.

Unless ofcourse you are laying down then it may be upward pressure. Got to cover all bases Rob.

You could also move the hand holding the remote upwards and fold the finger on your other hand steady
