JP1 Remotes

Hi,

I am looking for a real simple program that only transfers an ir-file to the remote. It should not have any other functionality nor possibility.

Is there something ?

If not, is it possible to just strip down ir.exe?

Yes there is, back when JP1 first started we used a program called "remoteif" to read the data from the remote and write it back. There's an archived copy of it here:

Of course, back when we used this program we were just reading from EEPROM chips, whereas today's remotes all have flash chips.

The bigger question is, why do you want such a program?

The old stuff knows nothing about the serial communications/flash based remotes. (JP1.2, JP1.3) so beware. I'm not sure that you can even buy the old JP1 remotes anymore.

If I were building a business that used custom configured remotes via these tools, I may want my customers to be able to backup and restore their remotes but not given them access to the full feature set that I put in to the remote.

(there are probably other reasons to want read/write only capability)

I was also guessing that it's something like that, but I still wanted to hear it from the OP, as knowing exactly what he wants to do with help us give a better answer.

I provided a link to the source because he might want to modify the program to use the serial jp12serial.dll program in order to talk to the flash remotes.

first thanks very much for the quick reply!

the reason why I would like to have this program is that my parents (and some of their friends) are now using a remote that I prepared. Since they plan to change some of their devices in the near future (eg DVD player and receiver - but did not decide yet which brands/models to get) they will need a new update.

IR is super but too complicated for them - its already difficult enough to explain to them how to start a program. After they saw yesterday all the things of IR they got intimidated.

So with a simple program I can just mail them my updated IR file and they can easily update their remote. There is no risk of confusion or accidentally tempering around.

Sending the remote to me - as an alternative - wont work - they cant live without it anymore...

...I see that I forgot to say that I am using JP1.2, SORRY

It won't work without being worked on since there is no support in it for the JP1.2 remotes.

The easiest thing for you to do would be for you to buy two remotes. One at your house, one at theirs. When they update, send them an updated remote and tell them to send you the other one back. (paint the inside of the battery compartments different colors so that they can tell them apart!)

Thats not good news - since everybody who uses that remote has to buy two.


Is there really no easy way to modify ir.exe?

If you're interested in modifying IR for this purpose, we can make the source code available.

If it were me, I would help them get IR installed and then tell them how to simply open a file and load it. Tell them not to change anything else in IR, which if they're as intimidated by it as you say, I don't think they will.

It occurs to me that they will probably find it too complicated to learn the signals from their new devices' remotes and so you'll need to visit them anyway to do it for them (or have them send in their devices to you). They'd be better off using IR - and it's free.

I guess you are right, if there is nothing ready to be used, i will try IR...

Just tell them not to change anything, give them the following step by step...

1) save the file from your email to their harddrive (maybe even suggest which folder to save it in)
2) fire up IR (maybe create a desktop shortcut for them)
3) click open > then select the file
4) click on "upload to remote"

and they're done.

I like to start IR by just clicking on the IR file, when people mail me an IR file, I just hit OPEN after I hit the DOWNLOAD Button, although from time to time this will cause my interface selection to change without warning.
