Interested in using the Onkyo898_Combo210_109+108 - v5.02.txt file. After loading it in KM, I found the above reference regarding byte2.

Did a search on the forum for "byte2". After reviewing about 10 posts, I'm still not quite sure what to do next. I got as far as locating the Functions tab in KM. Found the byte2 column which was populated. What next???

One post mentioned entering a decimal number in the Device Code, another about a device combiner, and another mentioning this was discussed in the "JP1 for Beginners" guide?

Very confused. Please help.

That line in KM is a short help for the protocol format. On the right side of this message you should see "Device Code: 210". This means Onkyo protocol uses single device 210. However there are two possible sub-devices as you can see from file name: 109 and 108. So, this is two-byte protocol, meaning each command requires two bytes. First is EFC and second is sub-device number (hence the message: 'byte2' = sub-device). This is clearly visible on Functions tab.

What next? Well, first ensure the remote on Setup page corresponds to your remote. After this, on Buttons tab you'd see all the buttons of your remote in the first column. Assign functions to them in the second colum any way you like. Then go to Setup tab, copy/paste device upgrade and protocol upgrade to IR and upload to the remote.
