JP1 Remotes

I've noticed on the latest Samsung Smart Remotes that come with their TVs (e.g. QN90B) that they've added a Disney+ App Launch button. Unless someone knows otherwise, I don't think there is a Hex Cmd/OBC in the Samsung TV Master File representing this app? (I haven't found one yet.)

If not, does anyone know if there is a way to get the Samsung Smart Remote to operate purely in IR mode so that I can try to grab the IR signals for its buttons? The remote insistently tries to get a Bluetooth connection when pressing any of the buttons (e.g. repeatedly sends the Bluetooth Scan Hex:74 IR signal). That's the only IR signal being emitted. I've tried various reset/factory restore button combos on the Samsung Smart Remote to no avail. Once a Bluetooth connection is successfully established, the remote no longer emits IR signals.

Now, here's a weird thing. I did manage to grab a seemingly valid IR signal (using an Xsight Color) for the Disney+ button once. ... Just once. But I've never managed to repeat this feat. The IR recording works perfectly for me to get the TV to launch Disney+ on my Xsight Color. I even successfully transferred the IR signal to a OneForAll URC4810 using its IR-receiver learning function.

The Pronto code and timings for this Disney+ IR recording is: This cannot be decoded into a known protocol.

I just thought I'd post this here as it might be useful to others with Samsung TVs. It would be nice to figure out a protocol for this remote, but with this limited information I can't see how I can make any further progress at this point.

I would suggest that you start with the Samsung TV master file (link below), and then try all of the gap codes (OBCs only go up to 255). It might be a good idea to re-test all of the "app" codes first, just in case any of them are for retired apps that might have been re-purposed.

The easiest way to test the gap codes is to create new upgrades that have all of the OBCs that are not accounted for in the master file, then load them up to your remote and test all of the buttons. If any of them do anything, make a note of which button/upgrade it was, so you can come back to your RMIR file to see which OBC it was.

If you find anything, please list it here and I'll add them to the master file.

Can you go into the TV menu and unpair the remote? That's how to do what you're trying to do with a modern Sony.

I'm just following along for fun here, but if you have a learning remote, wouldn't you just learn the code for that button? Or am I missing something?

Thank you for working that out. Yes, using the usual Samsung NECx2 protocol, that does indeed invoke the Disney+ app. This OBC/Hex was previously assigned the function "Standard Picture Mode" in the Samsung Master File.

Unfortunately, on Samsung TVs the remote does not appear in the list of Bluetooth devices (i.e. it is a hidden device). Nor is it a simple matter to disable Bluetooth on the TV as it requires going into a service menu.

Indeed, but even though the Samsung remote has an IR emitter, it only uses it to turn the TV on/off or request the TV enter its Bluetooth pairing mode to bind with the remote. All other button press actions are sent via Bluetooth only to the TV.

In case you are wondering, the OBC for the other two App buttons that should launch Netflix and Amazon Prime on new Samsung remotes should be: 243 and 244.

I don't connect my TV to the internet (because I don't want to let Samsung update its firmware without my consent) so I don't know which one is which. I only get the "You must agree to the terms and conditions...." dialog.

I'm slowly working my way through the OBCs in the Samsung Master File. I first did the unassigned OBCs, revealing some possible Applications and Functions. In the case of the former, a popup stated that the particular Application was not available in my geographical area (Canada) without telling me its name. Similarly, the unknown Function produced a popup that indicated it as not available. I did test the function in several contexts to see if I could find its specific use, but to no avail.
