Simple remote needed to control Westinghouse TV/DVD combo

Post by huge »

I just got a Westinghouse SK-32H590D TV/DVD combo for my mom. She's 80, she's getting very forgetful, and she can't really handle more than one or two button pushes. That's why I got her the TV/DVD combo - so if she wants to watch a remote she can just push a DVD in the slot and watch it.

So I unpack the TV and plug it in, and the remote (RMC-02) doesn't work. OK I'm trying to get it replaced, but in the meantime I'd like to have something work, and eventually I'd love to get a super-simple universal remote, possibly with big buttons, for her to use.

So I have two goals, which might converge into one. First is to get something working quickly. I have two universal remotes, a Zenith ZN501S and a GE RM-24925. I can get each of them to handle the TV functions, but not the DVD. After interminable code-search button pushing I could get the Zenith to do *something* to the DVD, but not the right things.

Westinghouse has a remote codes page, but nothing that matches up with the exact model number of the TV/DVD, let alone either of my remotes:

(http://www.westinghousedigital.com/remo ... aspx#VALUE)

(I think probably "SK Series" is less likely correct than "LTV-32w4 HDC", but at any rate I couldn't get either list of codes to work with my remotes)

So question 1: Is there any way to get one of my existing remotes to control this integrated DVD player?

Question 2: What would you recommend as a VERY simple and easy to read (possibly big buttons) to control this TV/DVD player? It doesn't need to control any other devices. I wouldn't mind some minimal macro capability so that I could program a couple of things in for her, but that's not the primary priority. She will almost exclusively be pressing On/Off, Play, Stop, Pause, Volume+- and the DVD nav buttons. Any pointers for me?

thanks for any assistance you can provide,

I wish I could recommend a remote for you, but even though "One For All" does make big button remotes, they're always in their really cheap line of remotes and are therefore not JP1 programmable, so even though you could find a remote that looks rights, you won't be able to add a code for the DVD player (if there isn't on in there already) and you won't be able to program the macros that will make it easier for your mom.

Here's a possiblity for you HERE .

Vol+/- and Ch+/- are different so you can go by feel which is which. The transport buttons are in the middle of the remote so they're easy to find. Some of the 1056 OCAP's are backlite.

My wife's embraced this remote. She never liked the 6011 which she viewed as too small and she couldn't read the buttons.

There's an extender in beta that's working pretty well. So you can set it up to work in a way that's easy for her.

These can be had for $16 shipped on ebay, so you're not out much cash should she hate it.

Best,
jeff
