Good morning all,

Since I've been in a JP1 programming groove lately, I've been attempting to document codes for all the equipment I have kicking around, not just the ones connected to the living room system (what prompted this exercise) So far I've posted upgrades for a Sony DVD player that is now acting as a CD player at my work desk (the original Luxman CDP died unfixably a few years ago; rather than buy another one I just slotted in a Sony that would do SACD and sort of matches aesthetically) and several pieces of Oppo gear (I love how Oppo Digital just posts the code sets on their web site; why doesn't everyone do this?)

The last piece of equipment I have to document is a Samsung DVD-HD841 which I like because it pairs well aesthetically with old Marantz gear (it is silver with a blue VFD), and plays SACD and DVD-A. I do have the original remote. I figured this was going to be just a trivial exercise but I cannot find codes for four buttons

I actually had this issue on several other buttons but by looking at several other Samsung DVD player upgrades posted in the file section I was able to get codes for most of them. Current upgrade for the DVD-HD841 is here

However the four functions I listed above I did not see on any of the upgrades I downloaded, not even Samsung_DVD_Aiwa_master.

I believe "Index Prev" and "Index Next" is for use with older CDs that sometimes split up tracks into several parts and use "Indexes". I know I have a few CDs mastered like this but for the life of me I cannot remember what they are, and it's only a few out of hundreds. I don't even know what "Page Prev" and "Page Next" do, even after downloading and reading the manual for the unit.

I mention this to explain why I don't know that I could brute force start testing OBCs on soft keys to figure this out.

When I say I cannot learn these functions, look at the "learned signals" tab on the .rmir file I posted in the diagnosis section. Instead of the usual protocol, device, sub-device, and OBC data the difficult buttons to learn show either **None** or **Multiple** in the "Protocol" column and nothing in any of the others. I swear I've run stuff like this through IRScrutinizer before to try to figure this out but I don't remember how as it was several years ago, gentle guidance would be most appreciated. I have tried to learn these buttons several times with my Xsight Color and the same thing happens every time.

I did find a file at Remote Central but IRScrutinizer doesn't like it, or I don't know how to drive IRScrutinizer correctly. I don't even know if it has the codes that I'm looking for anyway.

Finally, I seem to remember reading somewhere that you could download codes off simpleset.com without physically having a remote that used the site, I think it involved having a serial number? does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I also need to see if I can learn anything from the jog/shuttle wheel on the remote, but I haven't even tried that yet, I was trying to get all the buttons working first.

Also, if anyone knows of any discrete codes or codes that are not on the remote for this unit, I'd love to know those as well, but after a little web searching it seems that this unit does not have discrete power codes which would be the most useful. I'd be happy if you could prove that wrong however! (and hey, I just did it not long ago for my housemate's Sharp BDP; I found a discrete power off code that apparently nobody knew existed)

OCD is a hell of a thing isn't it? I've had this unit for years and have just used it as a CD player with my stereo and the remote has been thrown in a drawer the whole time. But of course now I've started this, and I need to finish it...

I examined the four learns and they appear to be sending 2 part signals, which I've not seen before. I don't know if both parts are needed. The last learn (Page Next) was incomplete, so I can't tell what part2 is for that one. try each OBC by itself to see if they do anything by themselves, then try them in macros where they follow one another.

I'm at work right now so I'll have to deal with this later...

Just curious, what do the other learns come up as when you look at them and do they match the OBCs in the working upgrade?

Edit: I wonder if those codes are different because i might have been holding the button down? As if it does something different on a long press than a short press? but since I can't even test the functions at all this is hard to figure out.

I wonder if it's worth dropping a line to Samsung tech support or if they'll just blow me off.

In RMIR, you need to go to Options > Advanced > Learned Signal Timing Analysis which enables a button on the Learned tab called Timing Summary, where you can see the raw signals.

There, I used 560 as a Round To number, then i set burst pair "+560 -560" to code as 0 and "+560 -1680" to code as 1, then selecting a coded option, you can see the raw binary.

To convert the binary into decimal you have to read it backwards (ie, left to right) so 01100110 is decimal 102, the device code.

I downloaded the Monday version, loaded it in RMIR, selected Learned Signals, Timing Summary, Save, and saved as csv file. I imported the csv into IrScrutinizer. The first three signals all consists of a number of NEC1-like dittos, possibly preceded by some nonsensical garbage, so I shall assume that the first three are just failed learns. The last signal (Page Next) also appear prematurely cut.

I tweaked this file manually to have IrpTransmogrifier to grok it properly (Name, raw IR sequence, empty line for each command). Deleted the first three and the last, for reasons above, and saved to /tmp/samsung-dvd.txt

Then I fed the file into IrpTransmogrifier OK. The first part decodes as different Aiwas, but only the first part. Looking at the protocols, Aiwa and Aiwa2 differs exactly as NEC1 differs from NEC2, i.e. Aiwa repeats with dittos, Aiwa2 by repeating the whole shebang. (This is the reason for "**Multiple** in RM.) So I restrict attention to Aiwa, somewhat arbitrarily. Approaching... But only half of the signal decodes, so let's turn on the recursiveness of the decoder Bingo! The whole signal decodes. So these signals are in fact macros, first an Aiwa signal (without repeat), then a silence of about 66ms, then another Aiwa, as per above.

This file is nonsensical: The Pronto Hex of the signals appear to all start with "0000 0000 0000 0000" which makes no sense.

AFAIK, simpleset.com is discontinued.

Barf, there is enough of Page Next captured to determine the OBC for part1 of the signal.

Still alive and well and a great resource for new codes since that's what UEI continues to maintain for its latest remotes. You must be thinking of EZ-RC which has indeed been dead for years.

wow you guys are way ahead of me.

I had some bad reads on the HDMI switch I got today, and found that just a short button press worked best. I'm going to try that on this Samsung before going down a whole rabbit hole.

OK, I did learns with momentary button presses and it appears that they still are as you say double codes or macros of some sort.

I guess i"m just going to have to let this one go and accept that it's as good as it's going to get.

I just uploaded the .rmir here if anyone cares to take a look at it but it appears that these two buttons are beyond my ability to put into an upgrade.

Have you tried programming the OBCs that I listed before to see if either the part1 or part2 OBCs do anything on their own? And then try following them quickly one after the other to see how they act in pairs?

Unfortunately in the latest batch of learns, you're still missing the second part of the Page Next button, though you did get the rest of part1 at least.

If you haven't given up, try doing several attempts at capturing Page Next, some short presses, some long presses, so we can at least see what the part2 OBC is.

the issue with testing is that I know I have some CDs with indexes, but I don't remember which ones they are (probably classical ones) and it would take a lot of time to find one because they really aren't common. I don't even know what the "Page" buttons actually do - IIRC I just got a "prohibited" icon when trying to use them from the original remote while playing a DVD or CD. So even if we guessed the codes correctly, I don't have any way of confirming functionality.

This is really just me being OCD and trying to make everything "perfect" when in reality this isn't a big deal for most people - they will likely be using these units just as I am (that is, a cheap SACD player).

Ah, got it, good to know. So here's what I would like you to do then. Could you program the 7 OBCs that we've found so far into an upgrade and see if you get the "prohibited" icon when you try to use them.

Also, please try to do several captures (like maybe 10) of the Page Next button, trying long and short holds of the button, as I want to see if there is a part2 that we've missed so far.

Do you have any CD burning software already, like Nero? If you do, you could burn a CD with indexes for testing purposes.
