hi, i have a one for all streamer remote and im trying use the learning function to assign the channel up and down buttons as volume control for a pair of powered speakers. the volume up and down now work, but im habing some problem with the mute button.

i can only mute, never unmute. to get out of unmute i have to press vol up or down.

then because i wanted to disable the 4 app buttons, I set all of them to mute. now if i just smash randomly those buttons, i can mute and unmute. but never with the same button. meaning if I press button N and it mutes, press N again will not unmute. i have to press another button. i swear im not making this up. lol what the heck?!

The power speakers probably has a toggle bit, each time you press it changes to different bit, but learning remotes can only learn one of these bits, outcome you can't press the same key twice in a row. Pressing a different key in between pressing the mute allows it to work. You need a proper code, the taught commands will never work right. You are on jp1 forum, think about programming the 7935 via jp1.

the toggle happens on the remote right? the speakers are not from a big known brand, how would I go and find the correct code?

Yes, it happens in the remote, basically a remote signal is a series of bits, each with a value of 1 or 0. For certain signals there is a bit that changes from 1 to 0 and back each time a button is pressed. When you learn the signal, you capture it in a fixed state, meaning the toggle bit is either 1 or 0 and it will always be that, it won't change like it's supposed to.

As Ed said, you're in the JP1 forums, so read up on what JP1 is as it will allow you to read the learned info and use it to create an upgrade for your device, which will toggle as it's supposed to.
