JP1 Remotes

Even with the bad link, my earlier post gave you the device codes that you would need to use to change a standard DVD recorder upgrade from the default "unit code 0" to a different unit code.

It's hard to answer questions like this when you don't know the experience level of the user, so please give me some background, have you ever used JP1 before to create or change an upgrade?

I was starting to doubt my sanity.

I am an absolute beginner. I just received my 8910 and am waiting on a simple JP1 cable from Hovis but am having problems with delivery. All I need to do is to get the discrete codes for On and Off for this other unit code. I have downloaded and installed RM and IR and both seem to be working. I have read the "Just for beginners - RM" article and it seems understandable.

However nothing I read seems to state the steps I would need to follow in RM to change the unit code. Maybe it becomes obvious once I start doing it for real but it would be helpful to me to have a couple of hints.

In this case, the "unit code" concept is something that resides inside your DVD recorder, so you wouldn't expect the RM tutorial to mention anything about it (anymore than you would expect it to tell you how to play a DVD or which is the best button to use for ANGLE, etc).

What the tutorial should tell you is where to enter the device codes that you need to use. The Panasonic protocol uses 2 device codes. In your case, the main device code will always be 176 but the value used for the 2nd device will change based on which unit code you wish to use.

If you open any JP1 upgrade file for a Panasonic DVD or DVD recorder, you will see that the 1st device code is set to 176 and the 2nd device code is set to 0. These upgrades are using the default unit code.

You can change any one of them to use a different unit code by changing the 2nd device code to 16 or 32.

DVD1 Panasonic 176.0 (default)
DVD2 Panasonic 176.16
DVD3 Panasonic 176.32

Long delivery times from Hovis is pretty standard, I'm sorry to say, some people have waited several weeks or even months to get their cables. But, even without a cable, you can go ahead and program up an IR file ready for your URC-8910 remote, and you can even convert that file into a WAV file which you can play into your remote's modem, which is a way to load upgrades without a JP1 cable.

Thanks much Rob. That is exactly what I needed and it now makes sense what you were telling me in the earlier messages and why that info alone would be enough for a more experienced JP1'er.

Someday maybe I will be able to offer assistance here. But for now I remain grateful to those like you.
