Which JP1 remote should I get? And where/how?

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Which JP1 remote should I get? And where/how?

Post by arantius »

I picked up a pair of URC-8910's here a few years ago, and built my own (parallel) cable. I love them. But one has developed a serious rattle (something, the mic for phone upgrades I think, is loose in there) and I no longer have a working computer with a parallel port.

So I'm looking to get a new cable. And it seems like I'd have to pay $20 for an adapter to work with my aging 8910's, so I'm considering replacing them with a 1.2/1.3 model instead.

But which? Most importantly which can I actually get today?

I rather heavily rely on abilities that the extender gives me (toadtog, to name the most important) so I'd want that as well. I've seen the chart, but it's a big list and tough to sort through. And I've seen http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13225 but I'm not sure what most of those are; links would help, "Insignia" especially seems really ambiguous.

Thanks in advance!

See the last few posts in THIS thread. HERE are specific details about the Insignia remotes.

Thanks! Looks like the RCA is the best option for me.

I'm setting up an RCA RCRP05B to eventually replace my 8910. The 8910 works, but the buttons are starting to get flaky, even after cleaning. If you use an extender, the RCA's is very similar to the 8910's. The RCA is especially nice if you have a Comcast cable box, as it's more or less designed for it.

As far as rattling, that is probably the voice coil coming loose. You should remove it to prevent other possible damage. There are instructions somewhere here on opening up the remote.
