2. No recommended order. Use whatever is easiest to remember.
Without a JP1 cable you cannot do most of the things Liz mentioned, like anything related to extenders, double-shifts, macros on shifted device buttons, long key presses, 8 devices or variable macro delays. So you are limited to 2 functions per key per device mode. The number keys are a bit different. They can have a primary function and a double-shifted function. Using a JP1 cable and extender you can assign 4 functions per key per device: primary, shifted, double-shifted, and long or double press. Using a cable, you can also multiplex devices for an unlimited number of devices (limited only by macro and upgrade memory).
Some DVD players have an option to turn off auto-play. Otherwise, you could add a pause command to the end of your macro so it doesn't play while the screen is blank.
