question about slingcatcher with popcornhour

Post by spediegunz »

hello I don't know if this is a dumb question but I'm about to purchase a sling box and sling catcher so that my brother can watch our tv content from over seas on his computer and tv I planned on keeping the slingbox at my home and I want to ship the slingcatcher to him to connect to his tv I know i will have no problems connecting the sling box to my dvr, but after doing some research I understand that sling box has no built in remote support for the popcorn hour A-100 and Ive already discovered that i can download a custom bin file for the pch a100 to make the sling box pc remote compatible with the pch.......But the main question is how would it work in terms of using the sling catcher from the tv over seas if sling doesn't have the pch in its remote database how will the slingcatcher be able to control the popcorn hour remotely... once again forgive me if its a dumb question but before i purchase anything i want to make sure this will all work fine I want to know if the custom binfiles have anything to do with how the physical sling catcher remote will work

when you install a Custom Remote it is actually stored in the Slingbox itself. Then, when any 'viewer' (Slingplayer, Sling.com, Slingcatcher, Slingplayer Mobile....) wants to send signals it uses the remote codes in the Slingbox to send the correct codes.

So the short answer is: "There is no problem" :)

thanks for that tibit of info alanrichey I am still a bit confused though as i understand those bin files go to C:\Program Files\Sling Media\Slingplayer\SBAV\ folder isn't that just a folder in the slingplayer software how do those files then get installed in the player itself I ask because i want to know since i will be the one storing the sling box at my house for my brother i want to know if i should install sling playing on my pc at home to install the custom remotes for him or can he install the custom remotes on the sling box all the way from the uk from his computer????

The files are only placed there so that when you run the Setup Assistant video source setup they can be downloaded to the Slingbox. After that they can be removed.

And this can be done remotely, the ONLY think that has to be done locally is the initial setup of the Slingbox where it needs to setup your router to enable viewing.
