Thanks alot for the help. The Robman wrote:Yes it does, it's the same remote just re-labeled for a different market.
As the only thing wrong with Liz's remote is the LCD screen, I would strongly recommend that instead of transplanting her RF puck into your remote, you transplant your LCD screen onto her remote, which is really easy to do.
RF Ring Question.

No, no, no.MaskedMan wrote:And probably the back cover off your 8910, since many of the seude backs like the HT-PRO has turn into sticky mess. The Robman wrote:As the only thing wrong with Liz's remote is the LCD screen, ...
No sticky mess here at all.
I do not permit to handle my remotes with hands dipped in peanut butter, cheese or other greasy things

Got the remote from Elizabeth and it was in great condition (outside the LCD). Just took the lcd off my ebay (new old stock) URC-8910 and everything is good to go. Really easy do, just 4 screws and some credit card strips to pry case open, took about 5 minutes. Wouldn't have been too hard to take the rf ring off (4 solder joints), but since the Elizabeth's remote was in such great shape and my 8910 had a donut ring, I decided to just transfer the lcd and use the 8910 as a backup backlit remote.

If you had needed to transplant the RF puck, how would you have handled getting all 4 solder joints hot at the same time? I find it very hard to get all of the solder off of a joint, at least enough to get it mobile.

I would have probably tried wicking the joints really well with braid. I also have a solder tip that might have laid across all the joints. I remember doing something similar with some op amps that had 4 pins on each side. I know that in my case there wasn't much glue on either of the rf spots, so there wouldn't have been much glue removal. In the end, as much as I like to whip out the soldering gun, it just made more sense to use the HTPro, rather than transplant an rf puck into a donut ring 8910. If someone has a broken remote with an rf puck I would certainly give it a look and see if I can figure out an efficient way to remove the puck. The Robman wrote:If you had needed to transplant the RF puck, how would you have handled getting all 4 solder joints hot at the same time? Desolder braid works great for single sided boards.
For double sided boards, a vacuum desoldering tool is needed. The only low cost tool I know of is one of these...

Radio Shack sells it for $11.

- Add some fresh solder to the joint with a normal soldering iron
- Squeeze the red vacuum bulb
- Place the desoldering iron tip on the joint long enough to heat the whole joint on both sides of the board. Too little heat will leave solder, and too much heat will damage the board.
- Quickly release the red vacuum bulb
- Hold the tip over a folded wet paper towel and quickly squeeze the red vacuum bulb to expel the solder.
- Wiggle the desoldered pin with a small pliers to confirm it is free. Repeat the whole process if necessary.

I have a bulb and braid, but I haven't seen a combo iron like this before. It's so cheap that I might just have to try it out.
