(obDisclaimer: while I'm a long-time OFA user, I'm new to jp1. I've looked for answers, but please accept my apologies if this is something that's been covered before)

I'm off to a flying start with jp1. I've used RemoteMaster to load the device definition for my Norcent DVD player and print its key map, then pulled the data in IR to upload into my URC8910. Now all of my devices can be controlled.

Now I need to program the remote with macros to turn the whole entertainment center on, and to flip everything into DVD viewing or TiVo viewing modes. The process for creating these in IR seems simple enough. I'm just not clear on what I'm allowed to do.

It seems to me that some buttons provide the same function regardless of the device that's currently selected, while most buttons can have different functions depending on the device in effect at the time. It also seems that some buttons simply can't be programmed, at least not without extenders. The thing is, I have no idea what these sets of buttons might be.

Is there somewhere I can go to determine this, or is it just a trial-and-error thing? I hope it's not a "just try it" thing, because, being a newbie, I don't trust my own work enough to be sure that the problem isn't my mistake rather than the capabilities of the device.

Macros are global, and it doesn't matter which button they're assigned to. The use a macro with a specific device, there's the Device Specific Macro special protocol.
