I've upgraded the instructions HERE on how to remove an IDC connector without damaging it. The new instructions encompass the black type connector as well as the gray type.

The title says IRC, text is about IDC. Should the title be changed?

Tommy, I use your jp1.3 usb cable, this time in the Comcast remote 1067Bx3. The pins are deeeeep down there in the compartment and the only way to get the cable out is to pull on the cable. When will I break the cable doing it - I hope never Smile

Thanks Liz, title fixed.

Very unlikely you will ever break the cable pulling on it. And since two of the six wires are unused, the odds are two in three that the first wire to break would be an unused one. The most likely end-of-life failure mechanism is probably contact failure rather than wire breakage, but to my knowledge no one has ever reported either.
